Groupama-FDJ U23 rider Samuele Manfredi out of induced coma he had been in for a month

Up-and-coming rider who won junior Gent-Wevelgem last year was hit by car while training in December

Up-and-coming Italian cyclist Samuele Manfredi has woken up from the induced coma he was placed in after he was injured in a collision with a car last month.

The incident happened on December 10 while the 18-year-old was training near his home town of Pietra Ligure in Liguria.

Groupama-FDJ’s Under-23 team, which he had signed to ride for during 2019,  posted on Twitter today:  “We have good news to share with you!

“Yesterday, Samuele Manfredi woke up from the induced coma he was kept in after his accident on December 10.

“He is no longer in a life-threatening condition and will now start a long recovery process.”

The team added that the teenager’s family wished to express their thanks for all the messages of support they had received.

Last season, Manfredi won the junior edition of Gent Wevelgem and finished second at Paris-Roubaix Juniors. He is also the current European junior individual pursuit champion.
