Delhi 2010: Millar storms his way to Commonwealth gold

England's Alex Dowsett puts World Champs disappointment aside to clinch silver...

David Millar powered his way to victory in the Commonwealth Games Time Trial in Delhi today, claiming Scotland’s first ever gold medal on the road with a time of 47:18:66 and adding to the bronze medal he picked up in Sunday’s road race.

The Garmin-Transitions rider was the last man out on the 40km, pan flat out-and-back course along the Noida Express Highway, the road lined with security barriers and absolutely bereft of spectators.

England’s Alex Dowsett, the European under-23 champion who is set to join Team Sky next season, put the disappointment of puncturing in the World Championship under-23 time trial last week behind him, clinching silver with a time of 48:13:48.

Australia’s Luke Durbridge took bronze, just over 1 minute down on Millar, the Scot passing him in the final metres.

Earlier, in the women’s event on a shorter 29-kilometre course, England’s Julia Shaw claimed bronze with a time of 39:09:52. Canada’s Tara Whitten won gold with a time of 38:59.30, ahead of New Zealand’s Linda Villumsen, just shy of five seconds back. Women’s world time trial champion Emma Pooley of England struggled with a stomach bug overnight and finished ninth.
