Jack has been writing about cycling and multisport for over a decade, arriving at road.cc via 220 Triathlon Magazine in 2017. He worked across all areas of the website including tech, news and video, and also contributed to eBikeTips before being named Editor of road.cc in 2021 (much to his surprise). Jack has been hooked on cycling since his student days, and currently has a Trek 1.2 for winter riding, a beloved Bickerton folding bike for getting around town and an extra beloved custom Ridley Helium SLX for fantasising about going fast in his stable. Jack has never won a bike race, but does have a master's degree in print journalism and two Guinness World Records for pogo sticking (it's a long story).

Loving those car-free roads. Can't it be for all time? It's virtually impossible to imagine that amount of quiet and clean air in daylight hours in many town or city - you have to experience it to appreciate it. You used to get Sunday mornings, Christmas Day - not any more.
Re: Proviz battery life - mAh does relate to run-time, it means the battery could produce 2600mA for one hour; without knowing the power (in W) and voltage of the system it's not possible to calculate an expected life in hours.
2600mAh is a pretty big battery though, it's very similar to the one fitted to an iPhone X for example.
Fairly average for an 18650 cell commonly used in similar sized lights. I would imagine the 600x more than standard is inept marketing speak for a rechargeable rather than disposable battery, ignoring the fact that 95% (guess) of high power lights are now rechargeable.
What sort of vehicle does the cockwomble drive?
Audi!
Most worrying thing about climate change - I read the other day that changes in weather patterns are making coffee crops much harder to grow, and even 'bog standard' coffee may become a truly luxury product
The woman on the bike makes a fair point. I love the idiot protesters that park their huge wankpanzers at the most convenient place ( for them ) then start protesting about people driving wankpanzers and contributing to climate change. Bloody idiots. Not to mention the idiots at Smithfield's, who were causing no end of problems to the traders, and carrying "beef = grief" placards, then disappearing to Burger King for lunch.
Are wankpanzers driven by wankpuffins? Is this a new word we're going to start using?
On a related issue, saw this in the Grauniad: https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/oct/07/a-deadly-problem-should-we-ban-suvs-from-our-cities
Buy your wankpanzer here https://pghs-store.myshopify.com/products/german-tiger-i-electric-remote...
Xena, I heard they will need plenty of cherry pickers in east Anglia after Brexit so you won't be out of work.
love XR - the woman on the bike has the patience of a saint - the 2 gobby "protesters" are offensive bitches and need to fuck right off!
yeah, I know, I said it....
What I never understand is, if you're a climate change denier than precisely what is there to be unhappy or angry about?
You've got your wish: a govt doing f*** all.
Two of 19 polar bear populations are increasing, oddly after a ban on hunting them was introduced in Canada, two are possibly declining while the numbers in the others are not known for certain, they cover very large areas.
As someone said Gothamberg is rising, and a number of Pacific islands have already gone, a 2016 study found that five of the Solomon islands were already gone (New Scientist 7-9-17)
Perhaps it's Xena who should do some research instead of mistaking their opinion for fact
noun
"the action or process of converting waste into reusable material".
Did that ^
Also, he was definitely not cycling before (for about 10 years), he's now recycling...
did Proviz intentionally make that rear light look distinctly like a Coffin? seems a little morbid for a Bike light!
Barrack Obama done fucked up when he bought that $15m estate 10ft above sea level.
Xena said.....oh yeah and in Greta’s own city Gothenburg the sea level has lowered , lowered . These are facts you can check for your self .
Land has risen which is a bit of a difference. As the ice caps retreat, the land which has been compressed underneath it starts to expand back.
Sea levels are still rising in most cases though, the only noticeable fall was several years ago where specific weather patterns meant most of the water ended up in Australia and the Amazon which slowed its access into the oceans for several months, especially in Austalia as it landlocked in some big flat area without flowing into the oceans.
Wow - pick the bits out of that. Gotta agree with some of Xena's post there. I work in Env Conservation for decades. Recycling is a tool to manipulate people to feel good about a middleclass infatuation with buying stuff and is itself all about money. Electric cars are BS because the real issue is we want to manufacture/sell stuff and want to drive everywhere. The real solution to the issues of congestion and consumption is not more (but different cars) but less cars making less journeys. Electric cars are driven by batteries that rely on materials from war torn areas and that are in limited supply. This is not a world solution it is a first world marketing opportunity. Tesla cars are being added to people's personal fleet rather than substituting (I know of 3 families locally who now have a Tesla in addition to the 4 other cars they have).
On a more general point raised by Pete; Governments/Local Authorities and so forth work with your money! If you want them to spend more money on greener transport etc then vote in a Party/candidate who is offering to do that. There is another argument that the actions of individuals can be powerful if taken on by all individuals. How much water do you use? If it is yellow do you let it mellow or do you flush? How often do you wash your car? Do you water your lawn with a hose or water from the bath? Does the tap run the whole time you are shaving (legs or face) or do you just run a bowl and shave in that? All of these things and more are important small steps that make a difference. The water companies are legally obliged to provide you and I with water and this is completely at the expense of the environment. Further, when you clear your house of debris do you pay a licenced carrier to clear away the waste or the first person with a tipper truck who rocks up on your doorstep (if you choose the latter to save cash chances are the waste will turn up in one of the woodlands I manage for wildlife).
Finally, I am a conservation professional not a crusty seed eating freak. I am also a person who cycles frequently and drives a car. Stereotyping in all sectors of society is unhelpful - you get that, right?
Good reply adding some real world experience in an area that you have significant experience in. I liked your list of ‘little things’ and I’m glad to say I do nearly all of them (now where’s that smug smiley?) but we can all do more.
The idea of pollution tax I’d to spend it on counter measures, but I’m sure we all know it probably just goes into the general taxation pot and is spent by the chancellor coming up to an election!
Not sure the generalised ranting by Xena can be taken as evidence of anything. Sure we have shipped our waste to landfil sites in the Far East, this is the sort of stuff that has to change, but ranting about the science and the scientists being wrong and killing dictators or not doesn’t seem to be evidence of anything that he claims.
I suppose we should have just let Hitler go about his business unhindered rather than spend trillions and kill millions in trying to stop him...
The unfortunate thing in modern times is the likes of Tony Blair taking a stance that was illegal to secure fossil fuel supplies and to topple Saddam then subsequent leaders not finishing the jobs they started in Afghan to rid the people of the tyranny that is the Taliban and then not helping out the poor people of Syria. Looks like the US is going to assist IS by pulling out and allowing Turkey to murder the Kurds...
PP
Apparently they saw a video on Youtube.
Environmental issues are completely different to climat change bullshit .
recycling for instance has never worked , we the western world have been shipping our shit out to Asian countries. Go check for yourself , not got time to post links.
All the data you get from the government is from the IPCC. It’s been shown time and time again that they altered this data to pursue this goal. Green tax for instance is worth trillions of dollars “ trillions”
so companys get taxed for their carbon footprint ( that’s mostly bullshit science) so they pay a tax and they just carry on doing what they have been doing and then they charge their customers ,”that’s us”extra to cover the cost of the tax they pay ,,,,,,it’s called a fucking scam .
Polars bear population has increased . Crop yeild is higher than it ever was . The US just has one of its coldest years ,remember the sub zero temperatures in the east .
Sea levels are not rising ,the Saudis invested millions on the Maldives in 2017 . The Maldives have been one of the places they the fake scientists say should be underwater well fuck me it’s thriving.
so are the Fuji islands, infact land mass as increased ...oh yeah and in Greta’s own city Gothenburg the sea level has lowered , lowered . These are facts you can check for your self .
There are thousands of climate experts who are not under the thumb of the government’s and are showing You the real statistics ,data . There is even a video on line of 25 NASA experts pointing these facts out .
It’s always about money , always . Wake the fuck up people go do some research, look into things for yourself why do you believe in governments who are indebted to banks etc and cut your services to the core yet are happy to then spend millions ,billions on weapons to fight wars they instigate because they want other countries resources. Tell me how bombing the shit out of Syria ,Iraq etc killing all those innocent people , just to get one fucking man ie. Hussain or Assad is ok?
does that make sense ? Why the fuck would you destroy countries and peoples way of lives to get one man ,,,,,,it’s fuckery of insane lunatics . If you think it’s justified then your empathy level needs rebooting. Back to to work
For real???
Follow the money is always a good bet, but most of your rants are just half truths, myths and stupidity. You know the numeric size of individual data, but not the value - the reason.
Polar bears populations increasing, decreaseing and stable depending on where you look, in spite of ice-cover loss - go and look at the historical reason for some of that. Crop yields the same, everywhere you look up and down, for many differing reasons.
US weather is weather - it's not the global energy balance - we really shouldn't be having to say such basic things after this amount of time FFS.
Sea-levels ? Globally rising, and the planet doesn't give a crap about what the Saudis invest in. Fiji - I guess you mean - has decreases and increases, some dramatic, in land mass. Usable land mass increase ? Nah, not really, go and actually look at the reason for the increase in spite of the contemporaneously measure sea level rise.
Sea level at local points in and around the Baltic ? Up and down - trending up for the most part - go look at the PSMSL data for the stations around Gothenburg and Sweden and Denmark more generally - single datum, useless cherry picking . I doubt you even bothered looking at the wind data and why that might be important.
I get it, you're not naive and know that big business is behind a lot of moves - but fuck me, there isn't enough tin in the whole fucking planet to make a hat thick enough to protect a brain from the range of bullshit you're quoting - some of which is perpetrated and enabled by the very vested interests you're calling out. Christ on a bike..
There's a cafe / wine bar near me that has a sandwich board outside - not to sell its wares, but to spout conspiracy theories. Normally it has a message about the health risks of the 5G mobile network (which incidentally, are rated lower than the booze they are happy to sell inside), but recently it put up a new diatribe about how climate change is in no way caused by humans, but is purely due to the 25 year cycle of the sun, so go forth and pollute with impunity. I wanted to go and tell them what dangerous irresponsible nonsense it was, but thought I'd be just as bad as them if I didn't go and brush up on the scientific consensus first. Clearly someone had a word though, as I haven't seen it since.
It has. I purchased a 2nd hand road bike then passed it on to my brother, he uses it instead of the car twice a week.
That's reuse, not recycling..................
You OK hun?
I know I 'could' be greener but compared to most people I know I'm already pretty green. If it's a nice to middling day I'll cycle to work depending on physical condition (managed to wreck my shoulder so I'm not always up for it at the moment), some days I just want to use my motorbike because maybe I just fee like it, if the weather is crap I'll drive. End of. Not going to feel guilty over it.
If it's a quick bit of shopping we need I'll walk down, obviously it's going to be heavy then the car is needed. My wife drove down for some strawberries the other day as I was a bit 'wtf?' She's sort of into fitness but it's all gym related not real world and she gets annoyed if don't try and park as near the door as possible at the supermarket etc. I'm not bothered about walking an extra 50m.
I also watch what I eat in the most part so I'm not scoffing down more than my fair share of food resources. The only thing where I'm probably blasting away a bit of power is my gaming PC but that's an indulgence not something I'm on 24/7.
The problem I have with Extinction Rebellion is a)they're telling the wrong people off, stick it China and India, b)I don't think it's what's being consumed that's the problem, it's the fact there's too many consumers. If we stop buying one thing, we'll want to buy another. If we stop buying stuff then......
If you look at pollution and waste per head of population then we are far worse than China and India. So XR are telling the right people.
Sorry
Do you not like being told off?
Though I think it's the government they are addressing primarily, not individuals. Individual actions are a drop in the ocean if the £25bn of roadbuilding, Heathrow 3rd runway and other airport expansion schemes, HS2 and the replacement for Trident are implemented.
But yes, I'm sure we can find someone else to blame. Those people in countries manufacturing the electronic gizmos, clothes and other goods we buy much cheaper than if they were made here, where they have lax laws and no protection for workers from exploitation, where parents and kids living in hovels manually process our toxic waste for us. Yeah, blame them, it's all their fault for wanting 25p a day* in order to buy some mouldy rice and a bit of paraffin for their tin shack's only lamp.
OK, now that we've blamed them, what happens next?
As for recycling, since it's so obviously a racket I'll stop doing it right away. Who's volunteering to take it off my hands? Or perhaps I should toss it out of the car window like all the other selfish idiots.
And I need to stop washing my car? I hadn't realised that my actions with a bucket and sponge would make such a potent contribution to wrecking the environment. I'm also depriving every other Severn-Trent water customer of clean drinking water (though in reality the water I use to wash my car returns promptly to the catchment... which probably means it's adding to the flood misery of those living further down the Severn. Aaaarghh!). And I didn't realise shaving could be seen as an act of wanton destruction (face only, in case you're wondering).
I've read some bollocks on here but this discussion really has taken the biscuit.
