Near Miss of the Day 345: Lorry driver in ultra-close pass (includes swearing)

Our regular series featuring close passes from around the country - today it's London...

Today's video in our Near Miss of the Day series shows a frighteningly close pass by a lorry driver on a cyclist - and given the queue of motor traffic, a wholly unnecessary one that put his life in danger.

It was filmed in November by road.cc reader Adrian on his usual commute from Ewell into central London.

Adrian, who has submitted videos to us before, said: "The Met didn't like this one either and prosecuted.

"This is the full video that went to the Met, so nothing to see until 2:14.

"Bad language involved," he added, although in our view it's perfectly understandable in the circumstances.

"At that point I was banging on the passenger door of the lorry," Adrian said. "Not a good day out."

> What to do next if you’ve been involved in a road traffic collision

> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

We were mentioning on the cycle lane in the later part of the video where it went two lane.

Here

And this bit here shows why it is no where near wide enough as the cyclist literally has to cycle over the drain grate or move out to avoid it.

That was really bad driving. I hope the driver got lots of penalty points and a proper fine. It's good that the cops decided the clips was sufficient evidence to prosecute.

What's of note is that the close pass was so utterly unnecessary. The driver either didn't engage braincells or has staggeringly few.

Now there's a downright dangerous bastard who should NOT be driving trucks.  Ever.  Anywhere.

Yes, that bike lane must be about 70cm wide. The guidance says lanes should be 2m.

Love the "safe" bike lane later on in the video which is just about wide enough for a childs bike without stabilisers. One of those special ones where it can be stated "I didn't enter the bike lane so I don't know how I hit him officer".

2:00 was bad enough.
Have made MiL blush with my outburst at the lorry driver.

I would*love* to hear the lorry driver's explanation for that!

Bl00dy good job the lorry had those barriers to stop vulnerable road users being sucked under, else Adrian would have not been in a position to report it at all...

When something similar happened to me a few years back I asked the driver what they were playing at. The explanation: “once I’m in front you have to give way”, meaning the front of his vehicle.  I bought an action camera shortly after that - which has paid dividends - the cops round here (Surrey so fairly cycle-friendly) tend not to agree with the kind of folk mythology the truck driver believed in.

As a fairly local rider, though, I’m puzzled by the bike lane that others are referring to. As far as I'm aware there aren’t any on that bit of the A24 (though I do tend to be blind to useless ones) - I think it must be the edge of a bus stop box.

And there's oBvIoUsLy No RoOm for a cycleway (or even wider carriageway) to make life easer for everyone  https://goo.gl/maps/ePYyjNH1X5umt31g9
