Near Miss of the Day 356: Classic car in classic close pass
Today’s video in our Near Miss of the Day series shows what the cyclist at the receiving end of it described as “one of the closest ‘close passes’ I think I’ve ever experienced – and what’s more, one from a motorist driving a classic car.
It was filmed by road.cc reader Dave while he was on holiday in Cromer last August.
“I was out on a circular route taking in all the beautiful countryside in North Norfolk when I was passed by this classic 1964 Ford,” he told us.
“I reported it to the Norfolk Constabulary and this week received notification that the driver has been invited to attend a Safe and Considerate driving course at his own cost.
“This was one of the closest ‘close pass’ I think I've ever experienced, and quite worrying that the driver told the police he gave me plenty of room.
“Hopefully the course will educate him as to cyclists needs and the risks we face by inconsiderate driving.”

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

You're right. I just use the main Long Ashton Rd to get between the A370 and Ashton Court/B3128. Looking at a map, Festival Way doesn't go far...

I was tempted to try Galibier gloves but opted for Endura Freezing Point from LBS last year. Not cheap (£60, I think). I'd prefer a shorter cuff...

Pleased to hear you got a result of sorts from the police, Mr Rock and Roll gets to go on a course - let's hope he had to squirm a bit as well: "can you pick me up from the station on Tuesday?" "I've got a thing Tuesday, sorry", "can't you get out of it?" "Errr"
Later, " you've got to go where? that stupid car again isn't it - you need to get rid of that bloody thing"
probably no power assist, so all those changes of direction and braking - they take human effort, you know.
I despair. I'd have been tempted to treat that as an attempt on my life, and react accordingly.
Owning a kit car myself, I am aware that the received "wisdom" is that those who are passionate about their cars drive more carefully as they are worried that they'll get damaged. I can also attest that my own observations confirm this to be a load of tosh....
I bet the chap who owns this classic car would have something to say if a toddler rode a bike that close to his car at a classic car show...
Came back just to like this comment. Also to add, not even riding a bike, just a toddler near it "ooh don't let them touch it they might have sticky fingers, or scratch it with their superhuman length/strength toddler nails!"
Another driver archetype: Thinks his vehicle has length = 0.
And he doesn't pay road tax !
Nor does the rest of the motorists!
