Contador looking doubtful for Tour de France

Rider "not in a good place" says McQuaid...

Alberto Contador’s participation in this year’s Tour de France looking is ever more doubtful as the investigation into his positive dope test for clenbuterol at the 2010 event drags on.

The Spaniard remains provisionally suspended from competition pending the enquiry and that lack of competitive riding and attendant fitness, according to UCI President Pat McQuaid, could be a deal-breaker in terms of his appearance at the Tour, whatever the outcome of the case.

"It is not a good place to be for Contador at the moment," McQuaid said. "We could assume that it's a possibility that he will not be at the Tour de France."

The case is currently in the hands of the Spanish cycling federation who have indicated that there may be an announcement on the outcome of their investigations and deliberations towards the end of this month.

Three-time Tour winner Contador is currently contracted to the Saxo Bank team in a two year deal that started this season.

I've just read Rough Ride, and am currently reading both The Death of Marco Pantani and Bad Blood. I can't help feeling that I'll be reading an as yet unwritten book about this affair at some point....
It'll would probably be a great book to be fair!

Try as I might I can't feel sorry for Bjarne Riis in all this, even though i've never actively disliked him.

I don't know what it is - his hypocrisy in admitting doping long after it mattered but then continuing as if everything was OK was what started my indifference.

Then his pursuit of Contador was like two people breaking up and the girlfriend immediately going off to sleep with the ex's best mate. That night.

Schadenfreude or karma - either way I find a surprising lack of sympatico with what is on the surface an unfortunate situation.

Why the Bl**dy hell is McQuaid making comments on a cyclists condition? Does nothing to remove the suspicion that the UCI have vested interests in high profile riders. I'd like to see him comment on the condition of every ProTour (or whatever it's called this year) team rider, just to level the playing field and show that the Governing body show no favouritism. 39

"It is not a good place to be for Contador at the moment"

Understatement of the year perhaps?
