Cambridge's first cycle-tour company launched

If anywhere in the UK is ripe for cycle-based tourism it is Cambridge and a new company, Cambridge Bike Tours, has been launched to provide just that option.

The company says it is the first of its kind to provide a programme of bicycle tours around the both city and its surrounding areas and it won’t only be from the saddles of mass-market bikes that tourists will be drinking in Cambridge’s unique atmosphere.  Visitors will have the opportunity to ride some nostalgic and immaculately refurbished historic British bikes on their day out.

While walking tours are already available, Cambridge Bike Tours promises to take in a longer stretch of the river and offer tourists a unique outdoors experience. Cambridge has over 80 miles of cycle paths and lanes to explore yet, surprisingly, this will be  the first tour company in the city to offer a programme dedicated purely to bicycle tours.

The company has been set up by Anthony Dean, a former Kings College Choir School pupil who on returning to Cambridge after working in China and Australia, spotted a gap in the market.

“The tours are all about having fun, discovering and enjoying our wonderful city,” he said.

The company will run four different tours operating every day of the week in the summer, except Tuesdays.

The City Tour covers the major sights of the city as well as a quick peek into some of Cambridge's historic colleges. The Grantchester Tour, is ideal for those wishing to explore Cambridge's beautiful surrounding countryside and the pretty village of Grantchester.

To get the best of both worlds a five-hour Full Day Tour which combines the first two options, while an American Cemetery Tour includes a visit to the cemetery and a ride to the village of Madingley.

All tours cost £20 except the Full Day Tour at £33 and include the hire of one of Cambridge Bike Tours' historic British bikes along with helmets.

The company's collection of classic British bikes from the early sixties includes machines from New Hudson, Raleigh, Kerry Britain, Hercules and even a Traditional Postie's Bike.
