Cyclehoop bring municipal bike pumps to London's streets

'Bicycle bollard' pumps on hand for City commuters...

If, like us, you're used to seeing decent municipal amenities for cyclists in your friends' holiday snaps of european towns, rather than on your way into work, then you'll be both surprised and delighted that Cyclehoop have installed the first of their Bicycle Bollard public pumps in London. The first two pumps are at Banyard House car park on Queen Victoria Street and at the London Wall car park in Moorgate.

It's a simple idea, really: a bolted down track pump for everyone to use. Of course, Cyclehoop have had to beef up the Bicycle Bollard to dissuade lazy vandals from having a pop at it, so the pump mechanism is housed in a stainless steel barrel that's bolted to the floor. The handle is stainless steel too, and there's a braided steel armoured hose to deliver the air, through what looks like a Topeak smart head adaptor. There's even a pressure gauge in the top.

The pump would make a great addition to any public bike park, and it's also designed to blend in with rows of standard bollards. Like all Cyclehoop gear, it's designed and manufactured in the UK, and it's receiving plenty of interest from other european countries. It's nice to have things that way round, for once...

What an excellent idea. As a one-time bike shop owner,I saw so many cyclists put off by crap, under-inflated tyres making riding a slow, sludgy business. They don't have proper pumps, they don't bother pumping up their tyres, or just don't know that half flat tyres ruin the experience. Maybe these marvellous things all over the place, together with a bit of an information campaign about keeping the pressure up, would do a lot to encourage happier, and therefore more, cycling.

a mini pump isn't much to carry. What would be more use? Water fountains?

Great! That's another step in the right direction to encourage cycle commuting.

The lyric Monty Dog quoted is indeed by Grandmaster Flash. You are looking at a different post-which is Bob Dylan, so no need to call him a philistine.

although your correction is partialy right, the lyric Monty Dog quoted is from 'The Message' by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five...
However Grandmaster Flash was a Legendary DJ who despite fronting the group had little to do with the music & certainly didn't write the lyrics, none of them did a sesion musician called Ed Fletcher wrote & performed them with Melle Melle.

I feel the Bob Dylan lyric was more suitable tho...

jesus isn't this a cycling website?

I can just see the police (terrorist squad) getting a call, someone's trying to "blow up" a building in the centre of London 10

Twenty years of schoolin’
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don’t wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don’t wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don’t work
’Cause the vandals took the handles
