Cops caught out on camera- cutting up cyclist.

A Yorkshire cyclist's handlebar camera has caught on film a police car overtaking him before turning left...

In Brough, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, a cyclist has caught on camera footage of a police car overtaking him on a road close to his home, before turning left directly in front of him.

According to the Hull Daily Mail, Paul Brown, 44, had fitted a handlebar camera to his bike following an incident where he was knocked off his bike at a roundabout in the Welton area a couple of months earlier.

"I had a lot of problems proving what happened, so I decided to buy myself a camera to fit onto my bike." he said.

What he wasn't expecting, however, was to have to take evasive action to avoid a collision with a police car. The footage from the handlebar camera showed a police Proton overtaking Brown, before indicating and turning left, requiring some sharp braking from the cyclist to avoid hitting the car.

"No one expects to be cut up by a police car. It was only lucky that I was not hit."

"I could hear a car approaching me from behind. It passed me and I noticed it was a police car." Said Mr Brown.

"It then completely cut me up by turning left into a side road."

"There was absolutely no need for it. The car just sped off as if nothing had happened."

When asked to comment at the time, a Humberside Police spokesperson said "Unfortunately, at this time, the footage filmed by the cyclist has not been shown to Humberside Police, not has the force received a complaint about the matter. Therefore it is not possible to comment on the specific incident or the nature of driving involved." She advised Mr Brown to contact the police so that an inquiry can be made.

Lara has been riding bikes for longer than she'd care to admit, and writing about them nearly as long. Since 2009 she has been working as part of the road.cc review team whilst championing women's cycling on the side, most notably via two years as editor of the, sadly now defunct, UK's first and only women's cycling mag, erm, Women's Cycling.

Believing fervently that cycling will save the world, she wishes that more people would just ride a bike and be pleasant to each other.

She will ride anything with two wheels, occasionally likes to go fast, definitely likes to go far and is always up for a bit of exploring somewhere new and exciting.

I think it says a lot about what cyclists have to put up with when a fellow cyclist gets cut up by a Police car and the standard response is "Ah, that's nowt".

Well it was a good few bike lengths and he wasn't pushing it. Yes, the police car was in the wrong and he cut it too fine, but lots of more dangerous incidents go unnoticed, even when contact and injury is involved. He got away with no damage to his bike and no cuts of bruises - That's a result in my book

not that sketchy by city riding standards but still poor form for a cop 37

@ gerald(soldier1980) what about pagan cyclists? we need to repent too?

the real winner of this debacle is the horrendous title.

Tame by any standard. Can hear his cranks creaking as he slowly grinds along the road... I was expecting to hear brake squeal and shouting; this looks more like he only realised how it looked when he viewed the video. Which, as others have said, is appalling quality - should have bought a cheap one from eBay; mine was £20 and quality is great.

Looks more like slightly careless and rude driving - cycling in London means you get the whole gamut of driving "styles". Taxi drivers, police cars, buses, coaches, two-wheeled motorised vehicles, cars and lorries - some of them ARE genuinely amongst the most considerate people on the roads, and for that I thank them ... but OTHERS are the complete opposite ... and I could use similar rhyming slang to describe them but am too polite (normally) for that ! I agree that a quiet word to the police themselves might have gone down better in this instance. I mentioned a helmet-cam to my wife and she was not too impressed - I think she thought I might turn into Victor Meldrew 3

Just because they are employed to enforce laws does not mean that they will obey the same laws.Have had incidents with (crooked ole pagans),cops that protect criminals, by not doing what is right. They protect other other evil doers because they are evil doers themselves. They need prayer to repent and be saved.

Looking at the video, that guy got mugged off paying out all that money for a contour HD and getting that atrocious quality image!

If anything, what plod did was bad manners and the cyclist should have pulled alongside them immediately, explained what they did and that he would be contacting their duty sergeant. Not whine about it in the local rag.

Well, the police don't generally take cyclists incidents very serious. When it's a member of their own club involved in the incident, it's not surprising that he didn't go to the police first.

I have to say I think the guy made a mistake by not contacting the cops at the same time as the local rag.

reading the usual bile overspill on the daily fail comments (look - I get the headlines on my news feed and sometimes I have to click them...ok?) I'm beginning to wonder if this is an elaborate anti-bike trolling piece and that the offended gentleman and his situation were assembled from stock photos and computer generated imagery.

I do love the comments section on the DF though, you can practically hear dentures being ground to dust and furred arteries bursting as they type.

I think this is the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIqCx_tAx8U
It doesn't look the worst of left-hooks but it's not the best bit of driving, they start braking to turn just as they've passed him.
I could well be wrong, but I have the impression from a mate in the Met. that not everyone gets advance driving tuition, if so then I guess driving standards will vary...

looking at the video, it's not that close to be fair, it doesn't look like he was going that fast, a few more MPH and the cyclist would have connected. Not to be mean but i know a few cyclists that would give their right arm for drivers to give them 'that' much space.

I think he should have taken the footage to the police before going to the media, given them a chance to respond and if necessary rectify. Also if you look at the screengrabs on the Hull Daily Mail page, the car doesn't really look all that close to him. (Although I'll accept that this could be down to the angle of camera, where it is mounted or because it's only a couple of stills and not the full video.)

Agreed - running straight to the papers does put a question mark against motives.

I disagree - from the last three pictures you can see that cop has his brakes on right into and through the turn - any competent driver knows breaking during a turn looses you traction and should be avoided - conclusion, he gunned it to get past the bike and had to slam on the anchors for the turn

Maybe he had absolutely no confidence that the police would investigate the matter seriously.
