Witnesses sought after hit-and-run in Leigh leaves cyclist with "horrific" injuries

Car involvedin incident yesterday later found abandoned and on fire

Greater Manchester Police have issued an urgent witness appeal after a hit-and-run incident yesterday afternoon left a male cyclist with what have been described as "horrific life-changing injuries."

The 22-year-old cyclist was struck by the car – a red Daihatsu Sirion with the registration number YX03 YFD – at 2.30pm on Greenford Way, Leigh.

The vehicle was later found abandoned and on fire in Hooten Lane, according to a statement from the force.

Senior Investigating Officer, Police Sergeant Lee Westhead, who is based at the Road Policing Unit at Leigh, said: "This collision has left a man with horrific life-changing injuries and the driver left the scene without any regard for the condition the cyclist was in.

"I am sure the community will want to support us in bringing this driver to justice and I appeal to anyone who has information about this collision or the car involved to contact me.

"I would also urge the driver to do the right thing, come forward and talk to us."

Anyone who has information is requested to call the Road Policing Unit in Leigh on 0161 856 7201 or the charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

I don't imagine the perp will give themselves up, so let's hope there were witnesses who can identify him/her.

22 years old, and life-changing injuries. lets hope the driver grows a pair(even if its a woman) and visits its nearest police station. Mind you if its burnt the car out what are the chances of that???once this person is caught it will be interesting to see how the case developes and what punishment this person receives. obviously the driver will immediately say he didn't see the cyclist(the usual). Probably get a driving ban, although it won't have had a license anyway, and a few hours community service. laws must change and we must have better ways of dealing with sub-human scum like this driver. what value are they to any community????

Horrible thing to happen to anyone, let alone a cyclist! All said, it will be telling how seriously the police really take this and more so how the courts deal with the offender if they are caught

Poor bloke. Lets hope he makes good progress, and the police find and throw the book and everything else at the driver...
