Female cyclist from Leicester killed in collision near John O'Groats, male rider in hospital

A female cyclist was killed yesterday in a road traffic collision on the A99 near at Auckengill, Caithness in Northern Scotland, close to John O'Groats. A male cyclist who was riding with her remains in a serious condition in hospital following the collision involving a motor car, and police are appealing for witnesses.

The cyclist who died in the incident at 11.50am yesterday was named as Elaine Dunne, aged 30, from Leicester. The location where the collision took place is six miles south of John O’Groats.

There has been no confirmation yet of whether the cyclists were undertaking an End to End ride or which direction they were heading in, although given the location it is clearly possible they were riding to or from Land's End.

A spokesman for Northern Constabulary confirmed to road.cc that the cyclists were together, and that police had spoken to the driver of the motor vehicle involved and their enquiries were ongoing. 

Police have said that a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal, and are appealing for witnesses or anyone else with information to contact their local police station or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
