Andy Fenn, who yesterday got his debut pro win for Omega Pharma-Quick Step in the Trofeo Palma, the opening race of the week-long Mallorca Challenge, has quickly doubled up by taking the second race of the series, the Trofeo Migjorn, again winning a bunch sprint. Two climbs close to the end splitting the field briefly, before the bunch regrouped with Alexander Porsev of Katusha second and Europcar’s Matteo Pelucchi third.
Team Sky’s Edvald Boasson Hagen was fifth, and while for many of the top pros the week in Mallorca is a chance to ease themselves back into racing after their early season training, it also represents a chance for up-and-coming riders to make their mark, something Fenn has done in style.
"Today the race was very difficult," the 21-year-old said afterwards. "There was a lot of wind and we also raced for a few kilometres under the rain.
“When the group broke up into 3 parts at about 40 kilometres from the arrival I got caught off guard in the second group.
“I was lucky I found great Kevin De Weert who helped me catch up to the leaders. Kevin put in a great effort and I thank him. Without him today I never would have made it.
“But I want to thank the entire squad. In the final everyone did what they had to do. It's a team victory, as was yesterday's, too. The group here is fantastic and it feels like I've always been riding with this team."
Born in Hertfordshire, Fenn raced for Scotland in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, nd joined the Belgian WorldTour outfit Omega Pharma-Quick Step having ridden for An Post-Sen Kelly last year.
Like Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas, Fenn is a past winner of the Junior Paris-Roubaix, and he’s also an accomplished rider on the track, with a string of British Under-16 and European Junior titles to his name.
He also won the bronze medal in the Under-23 UCI road world championships in Copenhagen last September.
