Cyclist in Scotland performs 'UK's first bungee jump by bicycle' (+ video)

A cyclist in Scotland yesterday executed what is claimed to be the UK’s first ever bungee bike by bicycle. The daredevil feat, which saw Adam Flint plunge 40 metres off a bridge above the Pass of Killiecrankie, was timed to take place ahead of today’s leap day and aims to publicise May’s Highland Perthshire Cycling Festival. 

The stunt, which used the facilities of bungee jump operator Highland Fling, was organised by Highland Perthshire Cycling, a voluntary group set up in 2009 to help promote cycling in the area, which today launches its new website.

Mr Flint, of Dunkeld-based mountain bike specialist Progression Bikes, said before his jump that it provided “just one example of the fantastic collaboration between businesses in the area working together to promote and develop cycling. We are really putting Highland Perthshire on the map.

“From the miles of scenic road riding, to ribbons of wild singletrack, we really have it all. And it’s not just cycling one can enjoy here. There is so much on offer, no wonder it is becoming such a popular tourist destination for families and thrill seekers alike.

“A lot of work went into organising, preparing and setting up this event, and thanks must go to all those who made it happen, both on the ground and in the air!”

Emma Burtles from Highland Perthshire Cycling, whose flagship event is the Highland Perthshire Cycling Festival from 4-13 May this year, outlined how the organisation “works to promote and enable more people to cycle more often in Highland Perthshire, whether locals or visitors, running workshops, clubs, school activities, and events to achieve this. “

She added: “Highland Perthshire Cycling works collaboratively with many local groups, schools and businesses in the region to make this happen.

“In the last few weeks a number of enthusiastic local businesses have worked together to create the giant 40-metre Leap on a bike; our unique celebration of Leap Year 2012 that will launch all that is going on for cyclists in Highland Perthshire and will highlight our brand new website.”
