Updates issued on Bradley Wiggins and Shane Sutton's injuries

Fractured rib and disclocated finger (not that one...) for Wiggins, Sutton expected to leave hospital soon, driver faces summons for Wiggins incident

Updates have been issued on the condition of Bradley Wiggins and Shane Sutton, both hospitalised when they were knocked off their bikes in separate road traffic incidents earlier this week. In a separate statement Lancashire Police said that 44 year-old Cath Burrows, the woman whose white Astra van was in collission with Wiggins faced a summons for careless driving.

Wiggins, who was released from hospital yesterday, is now recovering at home after being struck by a van a few miles from his home in Lancashire on Wednesday evening.

Team Sky has confirmed that Wiggins suffered bruising to his body and lung, a fractured rib and dislocated finger.

“Bradley has already recovered from a mild head injury which required overnight observation in hospital on Wednesday,” confirmed a Team Sky spokesman

“The swelling in his dislocated finger has also reduced and will not require surgery, and he will undergo further X-rays on his fractured rib on Monday.

“He’s convalescing at home with his family and is expected to make a full recovery in a short period of time.”

Making his first public statement since the incident, Wiggins said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and messages over the last 48 hours, and of course all the staff at the Royal Preston Hospital who looked after me so well.

“Although I’m still a little bit sore I will now be spending time at home with my family and concentrating on making a full recovery.”

Yesterday, Wiggins was criticised after extending his middle finger when the car taking him home was at the centre of a media scrum as it arrived at his house in Eccleston, and today Wiggins apologised for the gesture.

“I was tired, in a lot of pain, and just wanted to get inside, but I shouldn’t have reacted the way I did. I’m sorry for that.,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to getting back on the bike soon and continuing my preparations for the 2013 season,” added the Tour de France and Olympic time trial champion.

Sutton, head coach at Team Sky and British Cycling, was taken to hospital yesterday morning after being struck by a blue Peugeot 206 driven by a 61 year-old man in Manchester, resulting in a fractured cheekbone and bleeding on the brain.

“Shane is making steady progress but is likely to remain in hospital for one more day under observation,” confirmed a British Cycling spokesman.

“He has fractured his cheekbone which will require surgery in due course. He, like Bradley, is expected to make a complete recovery and will be back in work shortly.”

Bad driving isn't exclusive to England. We have way too many of them here in the US. The penalty for "distracted driving" as most states call it, is dismally low. You are right about the cell phones, and the over arching attitude of entitlement to the road. Some police departments do more than others for enforcement, but the judges throw the case out or it is unfairly judged by jurrors who are drivers and side with the driver of the car. It's better than it used to be but there is much room to improve. Pushing for education of drivers and cyclists will help as well as advocacy groups who contact legislators about laws and rulings. Long battle. Good luck and be safe.

I ride mtb and road and I also ride a motorcycle too. I'm am regularly aghast at the standard of car driving and the arrogance and selfishness of the drivers therein. I'm very sorry that Bradley and Shane had to be injured like this, but it's only when high profile incidents such as these occur that any notice is ever taken of the plight of those of us who like to travel on two wheels. The continued use of mobile phones behind the wheel is a case in point. Why DO people persist with such a massive dangerous undertaking? I'll tell you why, because the majority of people in this country are selfish, arrogant arseholes who couldn't give a suitable about anyone but themselves. Rant over.

I think a lot of people here would agree with everything you say. I was driving my kids back from football this morning along a road with large speed bumps in a residential area. Driving along it at more than 20mph is stupid because it knackers your car, so I was driving at just under 20mph. But some nutter in a VW Golf decided this was too slow and tried to overtake me, despite the fact that there was an oncoming car. He then cut back behind me and swerved around a corner so he could take a different route. What a prat. He was too impatient just to drive slowly and not damage his car along a 400m stretch of road.

The Press are a contrary beast, so Wiggo should be nice to them while he's on top. Give them the finger too many times and they'll round on him like a pack of hyenas.
Scum, the lot of them.

Just one finger. Shows great self control I think or was it the index finger that was dislocated?

How about next instead of giving the press the finger he goes inside and makes them all a cup of tea.

See the driver who hit Wiggo was telling her "exclusive story" only in the Sun. Wonder if they paid her for it. Apparently said she disn't think she would be charged

Carless driving - a £200 fine and a few penalty points then . . . .

Wiggo spending to much time with Gallagher and Weller. Thats how I would expect them to react, but it was funny to see his car driving in on the news and the window all blurred out. It wasn't until this morning I found out why 19

Hopefully Sutton will be back to full health in a short time aswell
