Cyclist who survived cancer twice gains support on two world record breaking attempts

Chain Reaction Cycles, the online retail giant, has announced that it is to back the world record rides of a charity cyclist who has twice beaten cancer.

James Golding, 32, is to take on both the 7-day cycling record in 2013 and the Round the World cycling record in 2014. He is raising money for Right To Play.

It's a seriously tough challenge to take on, but James has beaten the odds before, having been given just a five per cent chance of survival when in 2008, doctors found an 11.5cm cancer tumour wedged between his spine, kidney and bowel; he went on to develop septicaemia and peritonitis. 

Later, he came out of a coma at just 6 stone; leant to walk again and took on a number of cycling challenges, including riding across America. But riding across America wasn't straightforward either; James was hit by a truck outside New Orleans and returned home after being in hospital. But he decided to complete the ride in full, starting from the very beginning again and completing 3,473 miles in 24 days.

His next challenge is to attempt to break the 7-day cycling world record of 1546.8 miles to raise funds for charity and become the first official person to break this record since 1940. He will head to Australia to do so.

In 2011, following James's US effort, his cancer returned. But after more surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, he was given the all clear by doctors.

Chain Reaction Cycles will support James in his attempt at the 7-day World Record, the furthest distance cycled in a 7-day period; using the event as training leading to 2014 where he plans to break the Round the World Cycling Record, currently set at 105 days.

He will raise funds for the Right To Play charity, whose vision is to create a healthy and safe world through the power of sport and play.

The agreement with ChainReactionCycles.com will mean Golding has access to the best support and the most comprehensive array of products available.
