RideLondon 2014 ballot opens Monday

It feels like the RideLondon weekend has only just passed [that’s because it has - Ed] but registration for the ballot for the 2014 sportive opens on Monday.

Unlike most sportives, which have a simple first-come, first-served system, the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 sportive operates a ballot system which opens on Monday August 12 at www.PrudentialRideLondon.co.uk.

The 2014 RideLondon cycling festival will take place August 9 and 10 with the 100-mile sportive on Sunday August 10. The exact route will be confirmed following the full review of this year’s event.

The registration system will remain open until 6 January 2014 or until 80,000 registrations have been received, whichever comes first.

We suspect that after the huge popularity of this year’s event those 80,000 ballot places are going to fill up fast.

“Prudential RideLondon is now firmly on the map as one of the greatest cycling events in the world,” said Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, after finishing this year’s event. “It was a great weekend for cycling, and for this city.”


Surrey County Council Leader, David Hodge, said: “This year’s event through Surrey was a truly spectacular celebration of pedal power and I’m sure it has inspired many more people to set the wheels in motion to be on the start line next August for cycling’s version of the London Marathon.”

John has been writing about bikes and cycling for over 30 years since discovering that people were mug enough to pay him for it rather than expecting him to do an honest day's work.

He was heavily involved in the mountain bike boom of the late 1980s as a racer, team manager and race promoter, and that led to writing for Mountain Biking UK magazine shortly after its inception. He got the gig by phoning up the editor and telling him the magazine was rubbish and he could do better. Rather than telling him to get lost, MBUK editor Tym Manley called John’s bluff and the rest is history.

Since then he has worked on MTB Pro magazine and was editor of Maximum Mountain Bike and Australian Mountain Bike magazines, before switching to the web in 2000 to work for CyclingNews.com. Along with road.cc founder Tony Farrelly, John was on the launch team for BikeRadar.com and subsequently became editor in chief of Future Publishing’s group of cycling magazines and websites, including Cycling Plus, MBUK, What Mountain Bike and Procycling.

John has also written for Cyclist magazine, edited the BikeMagic website and was founding editor of TotalWomensCycling.com before handing over to someone far more representative of the site's main audience.

He joined road.cc in 2013. He lives in Cambridge where the lack of hills is more than made up for by the headwinds.

I would also recommend getting your name in. It was fantastic this year. Closed roads and amazing public support, what more could you want.

Spoke to one guy on the ride and he was just staggered. Mostly because he still expected to get T-boned at each junction!

OK, I had to get up at 2.30 to get there and getting back was a bit of a nightmare, because the roads were all closed, due to bloody cyclists! But, hey, my name's gone into the ballot for 2014.

Rode this year and it was the experience of a lifetime I have already put my name in the ballot for next year. I also think there were “only” 55000 in the ballot for this year because there was a lot of negativity about this event even before it happened including negative comments on this very site.

Not sure about the need to 'get in quick' - it's a ballot.

Admittedly the ballot will close when they've got 80k applicants, but they only got 55,000 last year.

Having rode this years event at the weekend I can't think of a better legacy, 20,000 cyclists and half of Londons roads closed? Brilliant 1

I would strongly recommend a boycott of this event until they can manage to put on a pro womens race. It really shames our sport and fails to provide any kind of legacy for the olympics.

Can't you just let things develop?! There was a pro women's race - albeit a crit rather than a road race - but timings over the weekend didn't allow anything more. There was a Youth and Handcycling event too.

Saturday was all about the Freecycle, effectively a very big SkyRide with the Handcycling, Youth and Women's crits in the evening (no Men's crit you'll notice..)

Sunday was about the Ride 100 and the Classic. Simply not enough time in there to fit in anything else but I'm sure that after this year they'll have a full review of everything then decide on next year's format.

And no, I wasn't there and I don't work for them but you can bet that I'll be online on Monday morning registering for 2014!
