Near Miss of the Day 591: Driver overtakes despite oncoming traffic

Our regular series featuring close passes from around the country - today it's Warwickshire.....

In today's near miss video a cyclist is almost taken out by a driver who tries to overtake him at almost the exact same time a car is passing on the other side of the road.

The dangerous overtake took place on the B4109 Hinckley Road on the border of Leicestershire and Warwickshire.

The driver is so close to the cyclist the wheels of his car don't even cross the white centre line in the middle of the road.

Unsurprisingly, the video does contain some strong language...

Lewis, who sent in the video, said:  "This is a hot spot for close passes in both directions and I have sent video into road.cc before from about 50m up the road from where this pass took place.

"This time the driver was in a black Nissan 350Z coming off the M69/A5 roundabout heading towards Wolvey.

"The driver passes me 0.15secs after I have been passed by a car on the other side of the road and the rear view camera shows that the drivers side wheels don't even cross the centre white lines."

Lewis said he has reported the incident to Warwickshire Police but as yet he has not had any sort of response from them.

> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

'The driver is so close to the cyclist the wheels of his car don't even cross the white centre line in the middle of the road.'  This is clearly incorrect from the video with the front camera.. the right side wheels are fully over the white line - the rear camera vision only shows the car before passing the cyclist; it was a fast, close pass that frightened the cyclist but please don't misstate what happened with an obviously refutable statement.

That's normal behaviour now in the UK and highlights the attitude most drivers take thanks to a continuous media campaign against bikes and the lack of police to enforce dangerous drivers.

"Oncoming car? They'll get out of the way or stop for me, or the ******* cyclist will get in the gutter."

The video is a good example but you'd only have to ride along an A-road at 4pm to see every overtake like that. Once the first car has demonstrated thta you can get past without scraping too much paint, every other one follows.

The road has 'SLOW' painted on the tarmac.......driver obviously can't read....

As stated above - this is perfectly 'normal' driving behaviour. Six points and a re-test should be the punishment for every close pass.

Damn it, all this time I thought those signs were warning of owls in the road.

How much of media advertising is paid for by the vehicle and related industry. Perhaps the Gov could introduce ethical advertising rules that limit the percentage of revenue the media could obtain by industry so as to reduce the bias of their 'news'.
