At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Muc-Off’s water soluble degreaser is a very proficient solvent based cleanser that makes short work of accumulated grease and grime and to that end makes a very handy workshop companion. The fact it easily washes away without obvious trace or harmful effect is a real bonus-especially if you're working on a patio or more ornate surface. However, while in a pinch it will tackle headset overhaul, it struggles with waterproof marine greases and care is required on delicate finishes.

The 500ml aerosol spray is simplicity itself. Shake the can furiously for a minute to agitate the contents before applying liberally to the affected area. Observing the waiting times saw it make short work of my RTB's grime and dung encrusted inner chain rings and rim sidewalls-watch carefully and you can literally see the solvent transporting the gunge away and pooling on the ground. Some particularly stubborn areas demand reapplication and assistance from a suitable brush and while the solvent largely evaporates without obvious ill effect, for peace of mind rinse thoroughly with water.

Effective on old school wet-lubes and lithium greases, it will manage impromptu headset strips, leaving bearings and surfaces primed and ready for re-lubrication. However, it’s not as aggressive as some pump-spray citrus-based cleansers, demanding continual reapplication and making little impression upon super stiff marine greases. In fairness, I suspect the aerosol propellant dilutes the solution’s true prowess and would be interested to see how the five litre workshop-sized drum compared.

Summing up, despite some small shortcomings, this degreaser is a versatile addition to the tool box/cleaning arsenal so long as exposure time and contact with more delicate areas are carefully observed.

Verdict

Versatile general-purpose degreaser.

Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

Muc-Off's Degreaser is a water soluble cleanser designed to tackle most kinds of gunk and grease including the super stiff marine variety. However, in my experience it's best as a spray on cleaner for filthy components as in practice struggles against stiffer greases so not ideal for headset or bottom bracket overhaul.

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

Sprayed liberally over the affected areas, you can see the formula literally carry grease and grime into a slighty unappealing pyuddle. It's great on older school wet lubes and general grime-including braking surfaces but not nearly so effective on bearings or other areas e.g. pedals subjected to stout greases

Lacks the potency of some citrus based de-greasers.

Yes its a de-greaser.But just not got the kick off White Lightning(Clean Streak).Sadly never been a fan off Muc Off.
Fenwicks products are so much better.Use them every day in the workshop. Best liquid degreaser on the market by far.
