At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

As you would expect the Altura Night Vision is a jacket that will get you noticed in the dark: if anyone can't see you in this then they haven't been paying attention.

What the name doesn't tell you is that the Night Vision is also a very weatherproof jacket too.  I wore the Night Vision every day for two weeks and riding with good guards never got wet in the rain at all. The Night Vision's reflective stripes illuminate brilliantly and from a great distance – on one clear night, I’m sure they were reflecting moonlight!

While the Altec fabric is not the lightest or most breathable around, underarm cooling zips offer extra air flow.  The jacket is made with sealed seams to make sure water stays out. The build quality is good and it's proven to be very durable. And after I'd got it good and grimy it survived being washed at low temperature and left to dry naturally with no ill effects, retaining its shape. The shell and lining are made of 100% polyester which is completely waterproof, add some decent waterproof leggings and a sou'wester and you could probably go whaling! (if your conscience would allow you – ed).

Useful features include: a rear pocket which the jacket can fold into; a long back vent that runs between the shoulders; a draw cord fleece lined collar which was great in colder weather but too warm in milder conditions; and  a drop tail which will keep your bum dry in the wet  There is a breast pocket for valuables with waterproof zipping.  All seams are piped with reflective striping.

The arms include a Velcro sleeve strap that is specific to Altura, they are rubberised for increased strength.  The jacket fits well over a base layer and standard ride / race jersey. I would not recommend wearing a thicker fleece layer with the Night Vision as you would get really hot even in arctic conditions.  Definitely wear this jacket with a combination of thin or mid thickness layers and allow to simmer slowly.

The hi-vis Night Vision is not a jacket you would wear off the bike, unless stewarding an event or dog walking in the dark, but does that matter? I would say not: this is a pure riding jacket and performs well for the recreational, leisure and commuting cyclist.

This has been my commuting jacket for 4 years now and, despite a number of washes, it's still going strong. It's a bit 'sweaty' but I have yet to find a cycling jacket that can 'breathe' fast enough. I used to feel a bit self conscious stopping in town and walking around in it, but now I don't care as I'm often carrying a pannier bag so look like a cyclist anyway. I used to hate the bright high viz stuff but if you're driving it just brings cyclists to your attention that little bit earlier.

I've got the black version and agree with all of the above.

Yes, it does reflect moon light. 1
