At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Proving that merino baselayers don't need to cost a fortune, the excellent Oneten Merino Long Sleeve can currently be bought for just £27 from Chain Reaction Cycles, the company behind the clothing brand.

Previous Oneten products have reviewed well on road.cc, and this merino baselayer proved to be no exception.

Oneten Merino Long Sleeve Jersey - logo.jpg

It's made entirely from 185gsm (the weight of the fabric) merino wool with flatlocked seams throughout. I favour merino wool for baselayers because it's soft next to the skin and very insulating for cold rides. Its other great appeal is that it's naturally anti-bacterial and odour resistant, so it never stinks, and it's very breathable so you don't risk overheating.

The fit, always important for a garment designed to sit close to the skin, is really good. It's available in five sizes from S to XXL which should cover most body shapes. Oneten recommends a hand wash or cold machine wash, but I had no issues putting it through a 30-degree machine wash.

As the weather warms up it won't get as much use, but on cold mornings and throughout winter – apart from the very coldest rides – it provides about the right level of insulation when paired with a decent jersey or jacket. There's a short-sleeve version too, currently £24.99.
