At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

By incorporating an integrated mesh liner, the Assos SS.campionissimoJersey_evo7 short-sleeve jersey eliminates the need for a baselayer. It works too, even for this dyed-in-the-wool baselayer wearer, providing exceptional comfort and mopping up sweat with impressive ability.

The jersey, as you'd imagine, is designed for summer use and warm weather. Not much of that in the UK, I hear you say. But we've had a few hot days, and those, along with a few trips to warmer climes, have allowed me to thoroughly put this jersey to the test. And I've been impressed. From the integrated baselayer to the quality of the fabrics, the high-quality construction, understated appearance and the race cut fit, it's a stellar jersey.

For someone who always wears a baselayer, even on hot rides, I was sceptical at first. But trusting in the company's assertion that it would 'give you the ultimate in summer performance', my hesitation proved unfounded. Not only is it comfortable against the skin, with no irritation noticeable anywhere inside the jersey, it really does work well in hot conditions and deals with excessive sweat well, helping to pull moisture away from your skin very effectively. And because you're not wearing a baselayer, you have less material between your skin and the air, and the result is a more comfortable ride.

Constructed from the company's own type.002 material, the jersey has a skinFoil mesh lining inside the front panels, while a simple mesh back panel made from the type.220 light material allows heat to escape. The main fabric has a soft texture and it's slightly compressive, which enhances the fit.

Talking of which, the fit is very much a race cut, but it's comfortable with it, especially around the shoulders. That's down to the seamless arm and collar design that provides a smooth and irritation-free fit around the shoulders and neck.

For carting around all the food and tools you need, you get three regular sized pockets and an extra zipped pocket, which gets an extra review mark from me as someone who likes a safe place to store the house keys.

Compared with Assos jerseys of yesteryear, it's understated but – to my mind – a stylish and good looking design. Yes, it's black, but Assos has built in some reflective details on the back to ensure you have extra visibility on those late evening rides. There are a couple of different colours available too, though a few more options wouldn't go amiss for those who like to coordinate their outfits.

What price for high performance? Assos has always been a company associated as much with its premium prices as its high-quality construction, fit, and function, and at £170 this is one of the most expensive jerseys road.cc has ever tested (Rapha's Pro Team Shadow is another £50, though that has water resistance as part of its appeal). But it's worth remembering that you're effectively buying a jersey and baselayer, which perhaps helps to make the price tag a little easier to digest.

Verdict

Refined fit and integrated baselayer makes it a hit in warmer weather, but you pay handsomely for it

FYI - This may explain a bit of the "new" look of this particular jersey. The old Assos is not the new Assos. What is seen here is the first new designs from a new group of owners. Time will tell where these guys take the company.

Has always been thus with Assos jerseys. Polarising because, well, it's actually quite easy to make a jersey, proprietary or not. I rate their Cape Epic jersey as being a really good road jersey, which it was never intended to be. But their best jersey is the Mille. It's still expensive but you should get it for £80. It's normally sized, so you can get a large if you're otherwise an XL in Assos. It just works.

I like Assos's understated designs of their bibs in particular. I like the way their lycra shines in sunlight. They look classy. Their cut, stitching and materials used all work for me. Take Ale shorts for example. Pretty good shorts but what I don't like is their billboard branding. I simply won't buy them for that reason. The same goes for a lot of clothing. Ribble have done some really good deals on Assos lately and functionally their shorts are better than most of these generic Italian bibs.
This top? I definately wouldn't pay £170 for a jersey and probably not anything over £70. It's simply not as essential as a good pair of bib shorts in my opinion. OK there's features like depth and accessibility of pockets and breathability which are important but there's a lot of competition with more features than this top offers. It looks nice but even discounted I wouldn't buy it as I know even at discounted price you'll be paying £120 or thereabouts.
Anyway don't stick this jersey in a tumble dryer as those labels will come off leaving behind a grey patch of glue. At least their bibs don't have those annoying heat applied stickers.

Wouldn't give this house space. Bought it from Wiggle recently, expecting the Assos standard. But it's quality is bargain basement. Put the jersey on and white stitching bleeds through the fabric like a £30 clastelli jersey. Colours are so boring and the design is dated. In fact, the whole Assos collection is dated now and needs urgent attention. I think they have taken their eye off the ball and more interested in sponsoring a motor racing team....not sure what that has got to do with cycling.  Assos need to wake up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
