New Culprit Legend available 40% off retail price on Kickstarter

Culprit Bicycles is looking for crowdfunding for the new version of its Legend, a triathlon-specific bike without seatstays that’s available in disc brake and rim brake options.

We covered the original Legend on road.cc as long ago as March 2013 when we saw it at Taipei International Cycle Show. Since then, Culprit has found a new manufacturing partner.

The Legend is designed to be easy to travel with.

“The tri world around us continues to integrate their bikes further (proprietary brakes, integrated proprietary hydration, cockpits,etc) which only complicate travel with the bike,” says Culprit. “[We] went the other way. The Legend can be assembled and disassembled easily and by most home mechanics. 

“Most parts of the Legend can be replaced with aftermarket products so you can rest assured that no matter how the airline treated your bike, you will most likely be lining up for the race rather than watching it from the sideline.”

Of course, the bike is also designed to be fast and Culprit claims that wind tunnel testing shows the Legend to be highly efficient.

“Testing has shown that the differences between the Legend and Cervelo P5-6 are very close,” says Culprit. 

“The average CdA [a measurement of aerodynamic drag] difference between the two bikes is only .008, or 1.9 aero watts. This is even more astonishing considering the non integration and use of disc brakes. In addition, the Legend Disc can beat the Cervelo P5-6 at several yaws and the Legend (retail value) can be purchased at 40% less than the retail value of a Cervelo P 5-6.”

The new version of the Legend can have 130mm vertical dropouts or take a 142 x 12mm thru axle for disc brakes. A multi-tool in a neoprene bag fits into a pocket in the top tube with a magnetic cover over the top, and you can opt for either a rim-specific or a disc-specific fork. You can use any aerobar and stem combination with the Legend. 

You need to pledge at least US$2,095 (£1,390) to be in line for a Legend frameset, including TRP brakes. This early bird offer is 40% off the standard retail price. More expensive options are available when these run out. 

The Culprit Legend Kickstarter campaign runs until 1 January 2016.
