Strava has extended its Live Segments feature for Premium members to cover mobile devices.
Live Segments provides real-time information concerning your current performance on a segment, along with your own personal record and the data of the person at the top of the leaderboard.
You get a variety of visual features that allow you to gauge your performance second-by-second on starred segments and popular local segments, and audio cues also tell you how you’re progressing.
Strava launched Live Segments for Garmin cycle computers last year, and now it has been extended to the Strava mobile phone app.
To use Strava Live Segments, you begin by recording a ride or run. As you approach a starred segment or a popular segment, the screen automatically changes to Live Segments mode.
You will see a map of the upcoming segment including a notification bar with the segment name and start location. As you get closer to the start of the segment, the notification bar turns from black to orange.
Once the segment starts, you see your current effort in the centre of the screen, your personal record on the left and the KOM (King of the Mountains), QOM (Queen of the Mountains) or CR (Course Record) on the right. Colour coding is designed to make it easy to view your progress and effort during a segment.
Once you’ve finished the segment, the screen summarises your results and then returns to your live stats.
“Before, during and after activity, Premium maximises performance and elevates the Strava experience with personalised coaching, advanced analysis and now Live Segments,” says Strava
Premium is available to all Strava users for £3.99 per month or £39.99 per year.
Strava Live Segments is available now for Android and iOS.

Don't understand why cyclists let a App dictate how they ride a bike. I do use Strava as a ride log and training tool, but not to inflate my rather flat ego. Never mind if it gets more people cycling it must be a good thing
Tried this on the commute in to work this morning and I love it. The blobs work really well.
Only issue is that I couldn't find a way to cancel a live segment that it was tracking and switch to another one. I can probably sort that by starring fewer segments, but it would be good to be able to change that on the go.
Found it really easy to switch from speed etc to the live segments with a quick thumb tap whilst riding on the tops.

Ive just set this up on my Garmin. Really can't wait to test it tomorrow morning, feel like a kid at Christmas. My issue is overlapping segments when I was starring them now. Was wondering how it would handle it. Either way, pretty cool and I'll just have to be more selective with segment choices or create my own private ones and star those.
I had a more expensive trainingpeaks membership, which, I came to realise, I was mainly using for fitness/form trends. Strava premium does roughly the same for about 1/3 the price.
Last month I finally gave in an tried a free premium membership after dozens of offers. I signed up but saw nothing of interest (why would I care about weight classes?) This I might have tried, I hope some vids sow how it works. Sods law.
Great, All they need to do now is fix the fact that the whole of strave doesnt seem to work on new Android phones (at all) - maybe they can offer the ability to download older 9and working) versions?
This "missing" feature was one of the main reasons I was literally just about to purchase a Garmin 520. Strava have just lost Garmin a sale, at least for now!
Looking forward to seeing how far off the pace I am on the Tumble this Sunday!
I was sure this functionality used to exist last year. I remember riding around with something telling me that segments were starting etc.. It wasn't my garmin doing that.,..

IIRC it would tell you the segment time, but not in comparison to your PRs or the KoM.

Nah, I'm pretty sure they did/do that as well. I remember it being fun on good days and not so fun on bad days. And then disabling it.
I think the news is that when they updated the look and feel a couple of weeks ago they made it so the live segments are now displayed on the phone.
I expect Strava can see from its database what the most popular OS is for its app. They then focus their development on the most popular and roll it out to the other OS later. It's the usual chicken/egg scenario. Why should Strava invest huge amounts of effort on the windows OS when it is used be such a small percent of its market? Of course, if every app on iOS was also available on windows mobile, there might be a bigger windows mobile market, but developers would logically argue it's Mircorsoft's job to promote the OS, not Strava's. I can't say the cold logic would make me feel any better if I owned a Microsoft mobile device though.

Anyone with A Mio Cyclo 505/500/315/310 who updates to the latest software version can also use Strava Segments

I guess there may be more Mio users than Windows Phone users?
Cheers

Even MS have given up on Windows Phone btw.
