Lumo launches new urban cycling range on Kickstarter

Clissold bomber jacket, Holloway gilet, and Brixton messenger bag all incorporate LEDs for night-time visibility

Having launched via two successful crowdfunding campaigns in 2015, urban cycling brand Lumo has now gone back to Kickstarter with three new products – the Clissold bomber jacket, the Holloway gilet, and the Brixton messenger bag. All of these designs feature Lumo’s signature LED lighting system that’s said to be visible to traffic from up to 400 metres away, but remains completely hidden until it is switched on. The idea is that the Lumo products look stylish when you’re off the bike, but offer practical and safety benefits when you’re in the saddle.

Check out the road.cc review of Lumo’s Regents Parka.

Lumo paid us a visit last week to show us the new products.

First up, the Clissold bomber jacket, which costs from £125 on Kickstarter (assuming that the project gets funding, of course, and the items go into production), is made from a lightweight Schoeller 3XDRY cotton fabric that’s designed to be both water resistant and breathable. It comes with a mesh lining and zipped internal and external pockets.

Fourteen white waterproof and washable LEDs run down the front and another 14 red ones are incorporated into the hem at the back. The USB rechargeable battery pack lives in its own little pocket and provides up to 14hrs of life per charge.

The Holloway gilet, available from £99 on Kickstarter, is made from another Schoeller fabric although this time it’s wool with a windproof and waterproof membrane.

The lighting is similar to that of the Clissold bomber jacket. Having checked out the products ourselves, we can tell you that the LEDs are very discreet when not turned on. You have to go looking in order to see them.

The star of the show, arguably, is the Brixton messenger bag, available from £99 on Kickstarter. It has a cotton canvas exterior from Halley Stevenson of Dundee, and a waterproof black ripstop nylon lining. You get a padded inner laptop compartment that fits computers up to 15in, Italian leather trims and an adjustable waist strap.

You get 14 white LEDs on the shoulder strap and 14 red ones across the flap. Again, they’re not noticeable until they’re switched on.

We’ve not used the Brixton messenger bag but we did have the chance to take a good look and it certainly appears to be a high-quality offering, and something that’s only going to look better with age.

The prices we’ve quoted above are limited ’early bird’ offers, so if you want to take advantage of them you have to get it quick.

Lucy Bairner from Lumo showed us the new products on Facebook Live last week.

Lumo has said we can review all three new products on road.cc, but that’s dependent on the Kickstarter campaign achieving its goal. If it falls short, nothing goes into production.

Call me old-fashioned, but I'm more than happy having lights which are separate from my clothing or my bags...
