Five cool products coming soon to road.cc

A preview of the coolest new gear we're testing right now from Bont, Shimano, Watteam, Efneo and Ashmei...

Here's a sneak preview of some cool products currently being tried and tested by road.cc's team of roving reviewers. Look out for our verdicts in the next few weeks...

Bont Vaypor+

£349.99

Bont Vaypour Plus - Boa.jpg

This shoe has been given a redesign for 2017, with the upper being made from a luxurious Kangaroo leather that Bont say offers superior efficiency and durability over long distances. An upgrading from the 2016 Vaypor+ is the BOA’s IP1 Dual direction dial with quick release functionality. Ventilation of the Vaypor plus is maximised by including ventilation holes across the tongue, top of the forefoot, through the front bumper and arch area of the shoe, designed to create an even airflow around the foot for cooling. As with all Bont shoes these are heat mouldable, allowing you to mould the entire chassis to provide a custom fit. They're feature-packed and sound impressive, but is the £350 price tag excessive? Mat Brett is currently putting the miles in to see if they're worth the outlay...

Shimano Tsukinist T25 commuter bag

PRICE TBC

Shimano Tsukinist T25 commuter bag - side.jpg

This is so new it's not even on sale yet, and Dave Atkinson is the lucky road.cc tester who has got his hands on one of the first to arrive in the UK. One of a number of cycling bags newly released from Shimano, the Tsukinist is aimed at the commuter with a laptop compartment, rain cover, reflective details and a light attachment loop amongst a whole host of other features.

Watteam Powerbeat power meter

£485.00

Watteam Powerbeat.jpg

Watteam are claiming the world's first add-on 'pro-level' power meter with their Powerbeat system, which measures left and right leg power and has 60 hours of battery life. It's made up of two patent-pending mechanical sensors and intelligent processing units that can accurately measure real-time left and right leg data, and is compatible with most hollow aluminum cranks. It's lightweight at 19g on each side, and supposedly very easy to install.

Efneo three-speed gearbox

$495.00

efneo GTRO 3 speed gearbox - crank 1.jpg

Efneo's front gearbox takes the hassle out of fitting gears, with a simple system that can be easily installed on most types of commuter, hybrid or e-bikes for city tours or commuting. They're claiming "the easiest front gearbox to install ever", with no frame modifications or shifter fine-tuning necessary. Efneo say with their system you can make immediate gear changes much quicker and easier than with a front derailleur, and also change gear when pedalling and in a standstill. It all sounds refreshingly simple, and our tester Mike Stead will be giving his verdict on whether it's as simple as it sounds very soon...

Ashmei Emergency wind jacket

£140.00

Ashmei Windjacket.jpg

Ashmei are a high-end sports apparel brand with high-end prices, and this jacket is as light and packable as can be while providing protection from showers when the heavens open. It packs down to 8cm3 and weighs just 121g, which means it easily fits in most rear jersey pockets. The jacket comes fitted with a rear tail guard to protect you against road spray to keep your jersey free from grit, grease and grime.  Ashmei have also added a reflective shoulder seam and rear strip increase visibility in low-light conditions. Mat Brett is currently seeking out wet days to head out riding in this jacket to test its credentials (in rainy Blighty, that'll be most days then...)

Jack has been writing about cycling and multisport for over a decade, arriving at road.cc via 220 Triathlon Magazine in 2017. He worked across all areas of the website including tech, news and video, and also contributed to eBikeTips before being named Editor of road.cc in 2021 (much to his surprise). Jack has been hooked on cycling since his student days, and currently has a Trek 1.2 for winter riding, a beloved Bickerton folding bike for getting around town and an extra beloved custom Ridley Helium SLX for fantasising about going fast in his stable. Jack has never won a bike race, but does have a master's degree in print journalism and two Guinness World Records for pogo sticking (it's a long story).

Those shoes look great. My Sidi's are coming to the end of their life and there's so much to choose from now. Whilst the Sidi have treated my feet well, I find myself itching for a bit of a change. Very tempted.

Power meters are coming down in price and shoes are going up! There's not much technology in a shoe. Stiff sole, soft upper.. simple. But a power meter, I can understand why the price is high.

The cost of technology is always coming down. Whereas quality will always command a high price.
