Brompton issues voluntary recall for bottom bracket on bikes sold over last three years

Recall affects faulty bottom brackets on bikes between April 2014 and May 2017

Own a Brompton produced in the last three years? Chances are it might have a bottom bracket that could be faulty with a “higher than expected reported incidence of failure” according to the London-based folding bike company.

- Review: Brompton S6L

It has issued a voluntary recall for bottom brackets on affected bikes produced between April 2014 and May 2017. It will provide a free replacement.

You can determine if your Brompton is affected by the serial number on the frame. The bikes affected have serial numbers from 1403284144 to 1705150001 and can be any model, e.g. M, P, S or H type, or any other configuration.

Brompton says the FAG bottom bracket, made by a third party supplier, meets international safety standards but doesn’t “meet the standards which don't “meet the standards which Brompton sets for its components.” It will replace the bottom brackets with a new tested part free of charge.

Here’s a video about the recall from Will Butler-Adams, CEO of Brompton Bicycle:

David worked on the road.cc tech team from 2012-2020. Previously he was editor of Bikemagic.com and before that staff writer at RCUK. He's a seasoned cyclist of all disciplines, from road to mountain biking, touring to cyclo-cross, he only wishes he had time to ride them all. He's mildly competitive, though he'll never admit it, and is a frequent road racer but is too lazy to do really well. He currently resides in the Cotswolds, and you can now find him over on his own YouTube channel David Arthur - Just Ride Bikes
