New spring and summer clothing highlights pt2 from Rapha, Endura, Kalf, Santini, Madison and more

It might not feel like it at the time of writing with unseasonably cold temperatures, but it is spring and that means clothing companies have been busy inundating us with news of their latest warm weather clothing ranges. So here are some highlights that grabbed our attention recently from the likes of Rapha, Kalf, Endura, Santini, Madison and more.

Rapha updates Pro Team Aero clothing range

Rapha launched its aerodynamic clothing range a couple of years ago off the back of its work with Team Sky, and for 2018 it has updated the range with a revised Pro Team Aero Jersey and Aero Skinsuit.

Changes to its Aero Jersey (£145-150) amount to a culmination of lots of small revisions, including new textured fabrics on the back panels to reduce drag, bonded tape pockets, a robust zipper, updated valuables pocket, and a choice of short and long sleeves. A women’s version is available in the Souplesse Aero Jersey (£135).

Rapha is keen to remind us in its press release that its skin suits have won Grand Tour stages, and the revised Aero Skinsuit (£230) now has bonded sleeve and front hem seams, a two-way front zipper, mesh lined pockets for better heat management and raised Rapha logos.

Fat Lads at the Back new Lads and Lasses spring clothing

Fat Lads at the Back (FLATB) has launched new jerseys for men and women, and new for this season is the Reet Jersey (£39.99) which is aimed at the beginner cyclist who wants a nice technical jersey that won’t break the bank.

A bit more money gets you the Ginnel (£69.99) with a more advanced fabric, 130gsm Staycool in case you’re wondering, with stretchy sleeves and side panels to provide a good fit.

The Yorkshire-based company also offers the matching Jewel Bib Shorts (£89.99) made from a combination of compression fabrics cut in an anatomical shape with wide elastic hems and soft stretchy bib straps, and a high-density padded insert for seated comfort.

Eurosport strays into clothing market

A fan of Eurosport? The sports broadcaster has teamed up with clothing brand Tenn Outdoors to launch a range of cycle clothing this spring. Called the Eurosport GC Collection, it’s available for men and women and features clothing design for “ultimate performance”.

Prices range from £46 for a jersey to £66 for shorts, and gloves from £20, so it’s reasonably priced clobber. Details include lightweight and breathable fabrics, 3D Coolmax padded inserts, mesh panels and micro-perforated Lycra bib straps.

Santini’s new 365 Collection - navy blue is the new black

Italian brand Santini reviews well at road.cc with a good focus on quality and construction, and of, course style, and its new 365 Collection features lots of new colours and fabrics as part of its “passion for innovation”. But the big focus of this new range is a new focus on classic and reserved styling, something which the Italian clothing brands aren’t always that good at.

The bright and fluorescent colours of the previous 365 Collection have been replaced by a more subtle monochrome colour palette, colours like black, grey, khaki and navy blue are used heavily. For the men, there’s the Classe jersey and Genio bib shorts, with development from the Trek-Segafredo professional cycling team the company sponsors to hone the fit and aerodynamic focus of the fabrics used.

Women are served by the Scia jersey and Legend shorts with colours ranging from strawberry red to aquamarine with a brief detour via some fluorescent orange, and a substantial amount of navy blue used throughout which Santini reckons is the new black.

Etxeondo focuses on gravel sector

Gravel and adventure bikes are hot stuff right now, and as with any trend we’re starting to see a lot of ‘specific’ products springing up, and there’s a notable increase in the amount of gravel clothing being launched. Rapha and Sportful are already at it, and now Basque-based Etxeondo has launched an All Terrain clothing collection.

The collection includes shorts and jerseys split into two ranges, one is aimed at those cyclists that ride at leisurely paces with a more relaxed fit and focus on comfort, and the other is intended for the more competitive types where body-hugging shapes for extra aerodynamics is used.

Aside from the difference in fit, a key objective behind the clothing has been the use of tougher materials intended to withstand the abuse off-road riding can subject fabrics to. A Dyneema anti-abrasion fabric is used for the side panels of the bib shorts for crash protection, or just for bashing through overgrown trails when the brambles and stinging nettles are overgrown.

The men’s Luura jersey costs £109 and the Rali bib shorts are £179.

Madison’s new race and sportive focused clothing

UK brand Madison has added some bold new designs and colours to its 2018 clothing range. The RoadRace Premio jersey (£74.99) and matching bib shorts (£99.99) are both designed for performance cycling and road racing and benefit from the Madison-Genesis pro cycling team providing valuable testing and feedback. Expect fitted shapes, lightweight fabrics and mesh panels for extra ventilation.

The Sportive jersey (£54.99) is more reasonably priced and aimed at cyclists less concerned with outright speed and more on comfort, and as such is ideal for leisurely rides and sportives. A soft stretchy fabric with vented mesh side panels and a full-length front zipper are just some of the key details.

Kalf goes into second year with new spring/summer clothing

New clothing brand Kalf launched last year with a strong range that impressed us when we reviewed it, and 2018 sees an expansion of its spring and summer clothing with new jerseys, shorts, gilets and rain jackets for men and women cyclists.

There are eight entirely new garments in the range, we won’t go through them all here as we might run out of space, but we’ll just draw your attention to the Flux Lightweight Men’s Jacket (£110), which with its 130g weight looks a good choice for the unpredictable weather common at this time of year.

The Flux men and women’s short sleeve jerseys have been updated with new bold colours and designs, which definitely appears to be a trend this year, with nice details like perforated underarms for ventilation and zipped pockets for your valuables.

Endura’s new Pro SL Lite clothing is designed for the hottest weather

Scottish clothing brand Endura has been sponsoring Spanish pro team Movistar for a couple of years and ramping up its development of cutting-edge clothing, and designed explicitly for the hottest weather is the Pro SL Lite range, which includes bib shorts and the updated Jersey II.

The Pro SL Lite bib shorts are new this year, developed with the Movistar team for racing in the Grand Tours beats the heat by using a padded insert with an open cell structure designed to enhance moisture transfer, so it stays dry for longer, along with perforated side panels and a lighter construction.

The padded insert is also available in three width options so you can get the perfect fit, Endura being one of the few companies offering a choice of padded inserts. It’s not something that many clothing companies offer but with saddles coming in a vast range of width options could chamois width options be a new trend in the clothing world in the coming years?

Along with the new shorts is an updated Pro SL Lite jersey, a superlight and race-fit jersey made with mesh front panels and a minimalist rear pocket design, which is now available in black and mulberry colours.
