Regarding your OCD, Shimano Ultegra 6700's are great (now 6800) - about 1550g and mine have stayed true. Decent value at approx £250. I can't say how they compare to fulcrum racing 3's, which I've also heard good things about.
Well at 86-ish kg, you're well under the 105kg weight limit for either set. With the discount, the Gotthard is about £335-ish, for which you gain an extra 6 spokes on the front wheel (the spokes are Sapim CX-deltas instead of the 4mm aero CX-wings on the Franc) and shed less than 100g in weight. You also get black hub and spokes which must be easier to keep clean than the white on the Franc, but you also get a comedy carry-on-style name. That much innuendo would keep my clubmates going for years!
Re tyres, you *sure* about gatorskins? I've got them on my winter bike, and I lose the best part of 2mph average speed. I'll be using Conti GP4000 Black Chilli on mine.
Wouldn't have to be Gatorskins but I've got a brand new pair sitting in the house ready to go on either a new pair of wheels or when my standard Contis wear down on my Equilibrium.
Gotthards do look better both aesthetically and in terms of spec, IMHO.
I got some H Plus Son Archetype rims on Novatec hubs with CX-Ray spokes for around that budget. There are other wheels out there apart from the Mavic and Fulcrums, which have non standard spokes.
When he says Campag makes his OCD itch, I think he's referring to the Campagnolo branding round the rim looking out of place. I would actually agree! Deero83, I've just paid £276 for a Swissside Franc Evo 3 wheelset. This is with 20% off, which is only until the end of the year. The reviews are great, but I've not had the opportunity to ride them yet, given the weather and time of year. I can say that they look phenomenal.
How did you get the 20% off @notfastenough?
Seem to be 439Euro/£347 on their site?
I had previously signed up to their mailing list, through which they provided the discount code 'swisssidepromo'. No reason you can't use it too. I opted for the free delivery option, but they still sent using the express48 service. They were well-boxed and included a spare spoke for each different spoke length, QR skewers, rim tape (already fitted), a pair of snazzy-looking bidons and a pack of blingy stickers which will probably find their way onto laptops etc.
Given the same direct-to-customer model which ensures the likes of Canyon bikes look great value, a reasonably favourable exchange rate, and reviews comparing them to Dura-Ace C24s, it feels like I got a great deal. Although one of my club-mates took one look at them, all shiny and rather pro-looking, laughed and said "you better be fit to ride round on those next summer!"
I've put in around 200kms on my Francs now, nice wheels, but some crosswind instability when you hit hedgerow gaps, not too hard to keep under control though. The wheels are stiff and accelerate better than the Fulcrum 5s they replaced, but feel more compliant and less harsh than the Fulcrums. +1 for the service...I bought mine through Ebay (from the Swiss Side folks), got them for €350 all in - so equates to roughly the same discounted price and came with same extras in the box as Notfastenough, so was delighted on opening the 'prezzie' when the box arrived. Colour scheme goes with the bike well...but will be a bit of a 'mare to keep clean - being white. i'd certainly look at their Hadron range if I was in the market for some carbon wheels in the future...

Thanks for your detailed post, I guess that's about what I expected in terms of performance. Re goodies, I bet it's not just me who's eyeing up the matching jersey and swissside bottle cages/QR skewers is it?!
I am dreading the cleaning though - thinking that maybe some snowfoam that car geeks use might come in handy. That and *careful* use of a jetwasher. My Trek Madone 4.5 is black/white with a hint of red/blue - it's the old team colours, and should look ace with the Francs. I have ranted on here in the past about everything being a variation of black/white/red, but screw it, I got good deals on both the bike and wheels.
Found the discount code via Facebook. Thing is, would I be better going for the Gotthard or the Franc? Would be planning on running 700x25c tyres rather than 23s ideally but not too bothered. Would likely be Gatorskins.
you can buy Zondas with shimano freehub, so it isn't an issue. Or if you are running 11 speed, you can use campag cassette with shimano gears with no issues.
if you are really worried about mixing campag with shimano for aesthetic reason just take the stickers off.
Thanks for the recommendations guys.
My OCD side isn't too sure about Campag as I have Shimano on both bikes!![1](https://cdn.road.cc/sites/all/modules/contrib/smiley/packs/smilies/1.gif)
Hadn't previously considered Fulcrums, will have a look at some reviews
+1 for the Campag. Zonda.
Fantastic value for money, approx 1550g weight, virtually bomb proof, quality cup and cone bearings with clever Campag design that means its impossible to destroy the hub however badly you maintain it...
Go for some Zondas, they're excellent.
Had a set built at LBS for about that money with H Plus Son chromed rims and Halo hubs. The genius of this was the rims have a braking surface and the hubs have 6 bolt disc mounts, so they fit my CX and my road bike. Ridden them about 1200 miles I'd guess on 2 bikes. Stiff, quick and look amazing. Really 2 wheelsets for the price of one. Freewheel sounds mental too![3](https://cdn.road.cc/sites/all/modules/contrib/smiley/packs/smilies/3.gif)
I have some ksyriums, they're good but like AndyNotts I find they do need truing every now & again.
The zondas are £253 at wiggle at present, a really good price & the reviewers seem to rate them highly, tempted myself.
I've got some zondas for sale![4](https://cdn.road.cc/sites/all/modules/contrib/smiley/packs/smilies/4.gif)
only six months old, make me an offer
Fulcrum R3 or Zondas. They're the same and tolerate heavy riders (even 110 kg ones) very well on rough roads. Cannot find more durable wheels than those at that price range.
check bike24.com or wiggle
Fulcrum are very good wheels, I wouldn't get too hung up on rider weight unless ur buying mega exotic wheels as I have had a pair of racing zero for the past 12 months and as a tad under 15 stone had no issues with regards to wheel strength. I realise ur budget is not in the range for zeros but club mates highly recommend Fulcrum 3, 5 and quatro as being good quality reliable and of a good weight, I bought mine from my LBS bicycle lounge Ormskirk and Mat was happy to fit cassete and check gears running nice and smooth, I guess it would be cheper on line but I find the reassurance of a good LBS important for major purchases. No I don't work for them.
Which ever wheel upgrade you choose don't forget a decent cassette, tyres and tubes make a noticable difference to how the wheels feel. Most of all enjoy how much faster the new wheels will make you feel!
+1 for Fulcrums, very efficient and you can swap the freehub between Shimano and Campag in about 3 minutes (once you've got the cassette off).
Fulcrum are nice but the Campagnolo Zondas are nice. Same as fulcrum 3s but a bit cheaper, guess it depends on your groupset.
I've had Ksyrium on my bike a couple of years now, I'm about the same height and weight. Depending how much you ride, in my experience, they need truing about every 6 months.
I'm happy with them.
I'm thinking about Fulcrum Racing 3's but like all things bike related there seems to be a myriad of choices!
