Bib Tights Recommendations - Mid Range

I had managed, a few years back, to snaffle up some Campag bib tights, which have served me well but this will be their last winter.

As I'm inclined to buy out of season when things appear cheaper can anyone recommend bib tights, with a pad, for rides up to about 6hrs for less than £100?

Thanks in advance.

What, that Assos are the best or that dhb are as good as anything else?

Assos are amongst the best from what i've heard, calling any piece of clothing, let alone their entire range of something, the best is probably a step too far. dhb also do some decent stuff, I have a bunch, at some very competitive prices but comparing comfort levels, build quality and other performance metrics of the pieces I have against similar item types from Castelli, Sportful, Pactimo, even Giordana and others would suggest to me that they are far from being 'as good as anything else'.

I use Chapeau! Thermal Bibtights. £89.99 and they are brilliant. Thermal enough to keep you warm when it's zero degrees but breathable enough that they aren't too warm at 10 degrees.

I prefer the shorts/unpadded tights combo- an extra layer of fabric on the thighs/around the bits is most welcome.

I've got some Assos winter windblock bib tights, which were bloody lovely but I bought them in the wrong size, so I only wore them a few times before buying something else (Sportful no rain ones, not bad, not amazing).
I'll sell you the Assos ones if you're the right size - probably 5'11 downwards.

PBK's own are as good as any, but only buy when they price drops to around £30 as they fluctuate from one week to the next.

Descente were my favourite, but they have all but dissappeared from the market.

+1 for Funkier, got a winter top of theirs as well and ditched the base layer this winter. (Tights, LS Jersey and Waterproof Jacket.)

FWIW, Assos are the best bib shorts you can buy, if you want to premium. Keep an eye on the sales. dhb are as good as anything else other than Assos.

You might think so, I imagine plenty would disagree. For me, it's total bollocks but to each their own.

Another +1 for dhb pro.

Don't get Castelli.

Interesting input thus far.

Any views on Gore bib tights, my LBS have some at 50% off which in itself appeals?

Bit outside the box,

Castelli San Remo Thermosuit.

Works out much cheaper than buying the bib tights and long sleeve jersey separate.

With a decent base layer it'll see you down to around 3-4degrees. Chuck a gilet on top and you'll be fine to minus degrees.

I'd say go for leg warmers and bib shorts combo. You can get much more flexibility this way.

This is sometimes what I do, however on reet cold days the gentleman's (or ladies) area has less protection with no thermal fabrics.... 17
But you can but thermal bibshirts now...dhb make some as well as many other brands.

ah then that's why you should be using something like castelli nanoflex bib shorts for winter. They're great for use as shorts in spring and autumn, and can cope with winter when paired with leg warmers. The also keep your family bits nice an toasty!

Fair point Jon d, I guess that would require more insulation...and actually some windproof stuff will be more flexible than others.
I was just disappointed when my expensive super flashy bibs arrived and had baggy knees... And fitted less well than my old pair 14

Perhaps you'd have been better off with Aldi's version last year 3 - an 'interesting'fit in my case, but a lad in my club bought a pair and was happy with 'em, looked a reasonable fit.

You got me wondering - just checked mine (I think Oxygen and the slightly lighter weight mtb equiv of 3-4yrs ago) and there's a decent-sized roubaix panel behind the knee - that probably helps a fair bit - plus there's a slight knee bend to the way theyre cut (as you'd probably expect).

I have a few pairs of "Funkier" bib shorts... they are quite a big brand in the US but never seemed to have made any real noise over here. Available from all online retailers (except Wiggle!)

The summer ones served me well throughout last year so I purchased some 3/4 thermal bib knickers for this winter... nearly 1500 winter miles they have been spot on...Even in rides for over 4 hours in 1 or 2 degrees...

Just ordered a pair of summer bib knickers for the spring an at a touch over £40... Theres no complaining!

Don't choose ones with windproof panels over the knees...unless you ride in sub zero frequently, the windproof fabric isn't that flexible so is baggy and restrictive over the knees

I beg to differ - I'd say there's a big fat 'it depends'.
I ride a recumbent, and find my knees get far more windchill than on an upright The Gore bibtights I have - two varieties - both fit quite well. Yeah, there's not as much give as you'd get from straight roubaix, but it's enough.

OTOH, I've got some Gore knee warmers, and they feel quite restrictive in the quads - BUT that's probably 'cos they're the next size up and I wear them higher, otherwise it'd feel like the circulation in my (not so skinny) calves was being cut off.

On an upright in subzero conditions or warmer conditions on the 'bent, Lusso roubaix seems to work well AFAIC, is inexpensive, and made in the UK.

Another for dhb, much more comfortable (up to 4 1/2 hours, haven't ridden them for the 6 you mention) than more expensive brands.

castelli sorpasso bib tights currently on sale for £90 on Merlin.

I have a pair and would say they are good down to just below 5 degrees. when the temperature gets to 0 I feel more comfortable in the sorpasso windstoppers which are a little warmer.

Ride AquaZero bibtights. They are only about £60, from the RideBosh website.

I bought a pair just after Christmas, the pad is firm and comfortable, they are warm enough for cycling down to just below freezing, in my view. The water-repellent finish seems to work, but I couldn't comment on durability yet. The longest I have ridden in them is ~30 miles, and they feel like they'd be fine for at least twice that.

When you follow the size guide you might find them a wee bit tight, but they have a good degree of stretch, and hold in place well, so I don't see this as a problem.

Wiggle's dhb Pro bibs - £60-odd, incredibly comfortable and I can't imagine why I'd spend more.
