AFAIK, all US cars have laminated windscreens and tempered side windows. Rear windows may be either - I believe sedans have laminated and hatchbacks tempered (but I may have that wrong).

The tempered glass "explodes" into thousands of pea-size granules, which can still inflict considerable damage. The intent (I believe) was to avoid glass shards that could sever arteries or puncture organs.

I know all road users have a responsibility to look out for others, but I must say (having ridden motorcycles and bicycles for many years in cities) that you really have to assume the cars are trying to kill you and act accordingly. It doesn't change who is right or wrong, but I would prefer avoiding the hospital completely.

Ha, I remember making that call myself in hospital... fun times.

I had interestingly similar facial injuries too, but was fortunate to miss glass.

Interestingly, and a question I'd like to throw out there... I have read up on a couple of bike/car interfaces in the states of late, and in both cases, huge trauma from glass cuts were the stand out injuries. Do american cars not use the same safety glass as we use in the UK/Europe or is it pure coincidence that these cases saw significant glass cuts?

That's a bloody good article, thanks.

Slightly uncomfortable reading at times - I'm incredibly glad that I was able to phone my wife myself from the back of the ambulance, and not have to have someone else do it for me - but there but for the grace of dog go us all.

Shouldn't be this way.
