Strava etiquette (tongue in cheek).

A friend I follow on Strava generally posts some pretty epic, hilly / fast rides. He's always been a touch boastful of his cycling which I've generally ignored. However, lately he seems to have stepped up a gear and is bragging more and more of his accomplishments. In my mind bragging about Strava accomplishments is the equivalent of a TOWIE actor posing for photos on the red carpet at the BAFTA Awards; in the real world you've accomplished nothing! This is Strava, not the UCI!
On top of this he's now posting every single piece of exercise he does. Four rides yesterday, longest ride = 6km. Last week he posted a 1hour swim. FFS!

My question is: How should I unfollow? Should I be courteous and send my best wishes explaining politely why I'm unfollowing, or merely disappear like a thief in the night?

*Edited 10/3/15 17:38*
I should have made it more clear that this piece was intended to be light hearted and not to be taken too seriously. The athlete in question is a friend I've known for years and will no doubt continue to do so.

To all the people saying they need to record every single session, no matter how small, for their overall mileage/time, doesn't Strava add it if you make them private sessions too? I thought it did...

Also, OP needs to go overboard and keep telling his mate how much seeing his virtual trophies means to him, I mean really pile it on.

I'm one of those annoying stravaists who uploads everything. It might seem silly to some but its interesting to know total mileage and time on the bike. Last week I covered a measly 40 miles, but most of this was on the BMX at the track and doing uphill sprint repeats. I was honestly surprised at the distance that I covered.

I don't use Strava. All my rides are recorded on my iPhone, using a similar App. Nobody else sees it, as my personal riding/running performance is only ever going to be of interest to me. I had a cracking ride out today. A new personal best, but who cares? Only me.

The important thing to remember about Strava is that if you're not careful about how you use it or relate to it, it can make you appear like a bell-end.

Take care...

I thought the point of strava was to motivate you. Nothing worse than seeing someone kicking your arse who you should be beating. If you can't take the heat unfollow 4

I have some friendly banter with friends over their Strava times but I try not to bombard.
I'm one who uploads everything so I know my monthyl and end of year totals...probably annoying to see me upload 2miles but it means something to me.

set your strava going and go for a ride in your car, upload it and tell him to check out your latest KOM!

Can't see the issue here. He records stuff with strava. Isnt that the idea. I record my 3 mile runs - so i have a log of my mileage. If I ever swam - I'd do that too.

It's not boasting - its just recording. Does he save the files as 'Look at my greatness - i have cycled 6km !!' ?

If he doesnt then I think the problem is with you really ?

Presumably you followed him ? Or did he force you to ?

Pedal harder and one day you might have something to brag about.

Either speak to him about whatever issues with him or just unfollow him, either of those is better than posting on a forum to bitch about it.

Haha, I have a friend like that. Leave 'em too it and concentrate on your own progress.

Can you not just scroll past these rides instead of crying about it online? Seems an easier option to be fair.

Sounds more like you're being down on yourself for not getting as much exercise time in. Strava isn't facebook or twitter, it's an exercise tracker. Which is why I get really confused random people give my shitty commutes kudos... there's no advertising, no spam potential here... oddballs.

Strava is there to track progress, which your mate is doing... so what's the issue?

Just turn off your alerts.

Nothing wrong with posting every ride you do after all it can be a log of your annual mileage for which every mile counts.
I'm sure the bragging gets on your nerves and the swimming seems pointless though I do see a few people (triathletes) are doing this now so he is hardly alone.
I follow a few people that post pointless stuff but I just let it go, it is not really in your face, if you really can't stand it then just unfollow.

Strava needs a "mute" or "hear less from this person" type of thing like facebook has. Or perhaps a "keep rides of less than x km out of my feed" option. I have no problem with people logging everything, that's entirely their prerogative, but I don't necessarily want it cluttering up my overview of my friends antics.

Just turn off the email alerts when someone else posts something. Or if it bothers you that much unfollow them.

I use Strava for me, the 'social' things are very much secondary. If people have problems with me posting smaller activities (I post commutes and 1hr swims) that's their problem not mine. I like to get to the end of the month/year and be able to total up what I have done, so I need all the smaller data.

People who share every Strava ride/run to Facebook, however short, are a different thing altogether. But that is a different problem.

Just unfollow...no reason given...if he's a very close friend....tell him to stop uploading data every time he picks his nose...or climbs a flight of stairs...maybe he doesn't realise his every single effort is really annoying you...or you could just ignore it...

Agree with The_Kaner. If he's a close mate, maybe a bit of ribbing about the posts might also do the trick. Last resort - unfollow, and see how he responds.

That's the problem with social media at the moment - full of wanabees and attention seekers.
