Shimano Pedals

I've got some entry level R540 pedals which I've got on well with (eventually) but I've spotted that the R550 have massively come down in price.

Are these a worthwhile upgrade or am I better getting the 105 5800's? There doesn't seem to be much difference between the R550 & the 5800's apart from £30 price difference & the fact that the 5800's are maybe made of better materials.

There's nothing wrong with my R540's so maybe I should just stick with them? 7

I wouldn't bother upgrading other than if you've got cash to burn. They're only there to attach your feet to your bike and as long as they do that...
I have the r550's and tbh I don't see the point in paying more for the 105 or ultegra-other than weight. They are smooth, reliable to clip in, don't squeak and look decent enough.

Deffo not got cash to burn 21

Read reviews on Chain Reaction & Evans saying that the R550 are a good bit better than the R540's as they are wider & so provide a better platform.

I need all the help I can get!

Pedals are *Only* there to attach your feet!?! They are the most important part of your contact with the bike as that's where the power transfer happens. One component it is definitely worth spending spare cash on to get the best fit and stiffest sole.

Well I'm pretty sure its your shoes that decide the fit....and how stiff the sole is.

Also using your argument speed play must be awful pedals coz they're platforms are tiny (admittedly I'm not a fan of them but that's just down to personal choice).
With a stiff shoe sole I don't see how platform size can affect stability-happy to be proven wrong tho
