Yes... Yes is the answer. Yes they are getting away with jumping red lights.
I'm sure I read that most local papers are owned by Local World, which itself owned by the Daily Mail Trust or somesuch.
a lot are owned by Trinity Mirror as in this one. A memo was leaked recently where they have asked journalists for more click bait stories as in this one.
As the poster says above if you let a narrative get hold it is difficult to stop it. Look at everyone on benefits as so called scroungers now with benefit porn shows ?
So it seems there is a problem due to lack of prosecutions, not evidence of actions.
I saw at least two cars jump red lights today. Tomorrow I expect to see this as the headline in the Belfast Telegraph "Are motorists getting away with jumping red lights in Belfast?" Or not. The answer is yes by the way.
Ianrobo is right to highlight this issue.
The problem is that if a lie is repeated often enough it becomes 'truth', i.e. it becomes perceived wisdom. Once an idea has become ingrained then it becomes even harder to refute because "Everyone knows that..."
Take a good hard look at these 'local' newspapers and their electronic versions. Have you noticed that they seam to look very similar? Now look at their registered addresses. A lot of them share offices that are nowhere near the location they purport to serve. Sometimes you can find identical stories but strangely different 'journalists'.
These publications live and die by the controversy they can create and the advertising they can attract. They will publish any story or opinion piece that will increase circulation.
Of course if you object about an anti-cycling story then you are a Cycling-Nazi-Lycra-Lout and will be roundly attacked in the next issue.
Have 'journalists' got nothing better to write about? Most who go on about Red Light Jumpers are not concerned about road safety - they're car drivers who are just p!ssed-off that someone on a bike got a jump on them while they're left waiting! If they were concerned with safety they'd write about speeding, texting, eating, selfies, etc whilst behind the wheel of car!
I am not naive about it and even commented on the piece.
The problem is that they still set the agenda's so they are still relevant. The writer is actually someone I admire so really disappointed by the tone of it.
Which is of course blame the cyclist, protect the drivers.
Why do local papers write such stories?
It works, you shared the link.
what a joke
