I did a 125 mile ride with an 810 this year and gaffertaped one of the non-exploding EE powerbars to the underside of my steam and ran a cable to the back of the unit - it didn't power off or stop anything when I did that.
not elegant but did work.
I was worried about battery life of my 510 when I did the C2C this year. However after just over 10 hours it just used about 35%.
I ran out of battery the weekend just gone and then had to revert to using my smartphone and Strava app to time me and then was able to merge the 2 rides together so there are other options if needed.
Am I right in thinking that I will need to use a different USB cable for charging instead of the usual one? Is it a micro USB i'll need? If so does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks
Thank you all for the great feedback and advice. It definitely looks like a battery pack is the way to go![3](https://cdn.road.cc/sites/all/modules/contrib/smiley/packs/smilies/3.gif)
Wheelz - what battery pack did you use?
Thanks
I used my Garmin edge 510 on the Coast to Coast on the Trans Pennines way non stop. The 510`s battery life lasted for just over 11 hours, then i used a battery pack to keep it running for a further 10 hours.
The most annotyng thing is when the unit is fully recharged it tries to cut out. It does give you a warning, ie; the unit is about to shut down in 15 seconds, so what i done was time how long the battery pack took to recharge the unit, or hit the X to stop the command, then disconnected it. But beware sometimes it will try to shut down then as well, but just hit the X to not shut down. It sounds hassle but in reality its easy.
Honestly, after 22 hours of pedalling across our fine country i managed to keep it recording no problem. My mates MIO was another story......... What a piece of c**p..

Oh and there are merge tools out there where you can combine multiple GPX files into one - so if you're worried about losing your data, do a reset before plugging any battery unit in and merge the files post ride.
Triathlon bag on the top tube with something like an Anker battery pack in - you can run two USB plugs out of it, one to the Garmin and one to charge a light or your phone.
I've done that on 24hr rides before now and it hasn't reset my Garmin 800 on plug in. 510 may be different - but worth a try. Those battery packs are excellent regardless.

You can pickup battery extenders via fleabay. Though my 705 gave 16hours once.
