Thanks for your help. I think I will have a look at wheels and tyres.
I was being drawn to the lovely shiny new things expecting significant improvements.

Short answer: No, I don't think you would.
Longer answer: I have an SCR 2 and TCR (carbon frame) of similar vintage. I don't find much difference between them, even though one was £500 and the other £1500 when new. I've ridden a £900 Specialized Secteur which felt very similar, in fact I found it a bit dull.
The SCR is a better bike than many people think, so I doubt it will be night-and-day. I think you'd see a difference is gear shifting and brakes but £1,000 is a lot of money just for that. My recommendations:
These would bring real improvement for a lot less money.
