I've never had a chain fail on me but I have seen it happen once or twice.
A quick link doesn't weigh much and chain splitter is part of my multi tool.
Thanks for the comments, I've purchased the two items in the OP.
Reviews hold them in high regard for the price, so.. just a matter of learning how now!!!
Y'know how retail therapy days are..
The chain tool on my Topeak Alien II multitool works a treat. I've never had to use it while out on the road, but having used it at home a few times, I'm fully confident it and a KMC quick link could save me if required.
I've a "proper" chain breaker which stays at home, and my multi-tool has a chain breaker on it which would no doubt work in a pinch. I have to say I've no idea how anyone actually breaks a chain when out and about riding on the road.
On my bike with a Shimano 10spd transmission I use KMC quick links, £6 for two as I recall. I fit one when I fit the chain, and have another sealed in a freezer bag in my saddle bag just in case. I've never needed or used them for anything other than cleaning the chain more easily - but then again I reckon I'm lucky as I've not had a single puncture in the last 7000 miles![1](https://cdn.road.cc/sites/all/modules/contrib/smiley/packs/smilies/1.gif)
Cheers,
Guessing this if I wanna stay cheap then this,

and this

But just wanting to check as I've heard different chains use different systems.
