Slate Owners / Considering a Slate

So I've read and seen a lot of good reviews of the Cannondale Slate but there seems to be a lot of negativity aimed at it also. As I understand it the tyre choice  may be a limiting factor but I believe you can get Schwalbe G-One to fit.

The other issue is the gearing seems to be a little odd for this type of bike. You can however pick up the Apex version for a snip under a grand. Would this gearing be better suited than the 105 version which has Shimano 105 5800, 11-28, 11-speed?

Thoughts welcomed.
