Looks like a great deal, but I wouldn't read too much into it implying anything, as they're going to have done their maths before running the offer. I'm sure the markup on the first bike more than covers the cost price of the free one.
It's a perfect way to justify bringing even more bikes into the house though, just as it is that extra tube of Pringles when they're on a BOGOF.
On one and planet x always have offers that are great. I got my Lynskey built frame with dura ace for a mega bargin in 2008 (I think) Dont read too much into it.
As for the deal- The mtb looks pretty sweet although I have lost touch with that side of things these days.
The Pompino is a great bike but I would definately want drops which is another £100
