Constantly keeping an eye on temperature from weather fore(mis)casts.
They should make a cleat material that grips on ice![4](https://cdn.road.cc/sites/all/modules/contrib/smiley/packs/smilies/4.gif)
The thing I find is that you're on the bike and it doesn't *feel* too slippery, you know, slippery but you still feel kind of "in control". Then you put your foot on the ground and you're almost arse over tit straight away.
Just highlights how grippy my tyre is compared to my cleats!
I got caught in a snow/sleet shower - it instantly froze and learnt FAST: rubber & ice dont like each other...
Ride safe fellas!
It's not worth eating Tarmac if ice is around!
Aye, till a year ago I was out in obscenely low temperatures - 14 and so on. Beard icicles and frozen bottles. It's not the cold which stopped me, it's the fractured femur from hitting ice..! The turbo is getting some stick this year..
I'm not bothered about the cold, but the thin layer of sleet over the thin layer of ice which I found yesterday morning sent me off to a spinning class instead. (Wuss! I hear you shout!
) It's all miles in the legs.
Did a couple of hours late afternoon today chasing the light - was surprised to see some snow in the fields and in the lanes to the north of Bath… mind you melting run off and resulting flood took care of that - after a mile of gritty slurry that produced looked like i'd been in a cross race.
Was also surprised to hit a patch of sheet of ice less than a mile from my front door - luckily it was on a short sharp ramp so I was doing about 0.5mph when my front wheel went sideways and was able to get a foot down… mind you I nearly fell over just trying to stand up.
Just above zero for the commute some mornings last week.
Managed to get out for a 25-miler in 5°C today, though with a cold NW wind. It was nice to be riding in sunlight for a change and the snow on the Berwyn hills was very picturesque![1](https://cdn.road.cc/sites/all/modules/contrib/smiley/packs/smilies/1.gif)
I was out for a couple of hours yesterday (Saturday, just south of Salisbury) but there was so much black ice it was scary - losing lots of traction on the wheel and those times I put my feet on the ground felt even more slippy.
We going to climb a local hill (Dean Hill) but seeing a white van come a cropper at the bottom made me turn around and go home.
I love my bike but going out yesterday was just a bad idea. Particularly frightening to feel my wheel slipping then seeing cars coming toward me at speed, just not worth it.
Ah Bath/Bristol I miss the hills :**(
Just got back from some training bit cold!
Wheezing now from beating my personal
times by 10 secs lol.
It was nice to see the Sun!![1](https://cdn.road.cc/sites/all/modules/contrib/smiley/packs/smilies/1.gif)
Murdered some Jaffa cakes when home...
not been super cold round bath yet, but did go out for 2hrs on sat and there was still frost in the shade at 3pm when we got back... bonfire warmed me up though![1](https://cdn.road.cc/sites/all/modules/contrib/smiley/packs/smilies/1.gif)
Been raining where I am but might sneak out after the final whistle!
At least the ice has gone!
You riders are great motivators!
Did my 18 mile each way occasional commute yesterday morning at 5am. It was plenty cold enough but of more immediate concern was the glistening of the icy road. With a chance of snow this morning I have elected to bring the tin box instead.
As a committed metric century challenger I've already been out and logged a ton this month along with a couple of 80+ rides when the wind was blowing. Wrap up properly and get out there.
Only had one ride this year in minus figues temp so far however I must learn not to ignore the 'road liable to flooding' signs at this time of year though...
Yep. I'm out there was -6 the other morning. On another note cycled all of last winter and it was -20 most days!!! Even chanced it in the big winds until flatmates hid my bike![2](https://cdn.road.cc/sites/all/modules/contrib/smiley/packs/smilies/2.gif)
Did 9 miles commuting at 0645 in driving snow on Friday it may not have been quite -2C but I did feel fairly hardcore. Punctured in the middle of nowhere in freezing temeratures in the dark on the Friday night on the week before. Thanks to the man from Twenty3c who stopped to help me out as I was losing hope along with the feeling in my fingers.
