Garmin 800 vs. iPhone and Cateye V3. And what do you use?

Been window shopping...
I currently have a Cateye V3 boxed unused and use my
iPhone 4 for GPS when running.
Would like to do some exploring in summer rides.
Garmin 800 looks quite tasty!
What do you use for training and cycle computers?

£326.99 seems like a bargain!
You have a point yenrod, I would like a garmin system only but just splashed on a new bike and holiday abroad.
My personal reasons why I am giving this a try:
1) You can use any mobile phone -doesn't have to be an iphone.
2) Also I have to carry a phone with me -so I'd rather have it on the bike instead of inside my back pocket/me crushing it.
3) Garmin is £200-400 too and you could crush that.
4) I do have full insurance including own damage £5 pm £20 excess though. (Old policy I keep renewing.)
5) I just want less to carry and I find my mobile is great as a running aid being strapped to my arm with mp3s, gps tracking/ maps and most of all a mobile.
Adding things up it will be £160-ish for the waterproof/shock housing, clamp bracket, extra battery pack and a speed/cadence sensor.
I will see if this works and report back as we could save a few bob or report back it is pants lol
The phone battery is the weak point and going XC, I doubt the GPS will be as good as a Garmin.
Yet for road use and a 20+ apps using ANT+ they may be on to something! We'll see in a few weeks!
Ive a garmin 750 - theirs NO WAY id put a 500quid iphone on a bike in a million yrs but then again i wouldnt use an iphone end of story..

The one I have looked at has an external battery
pack that can be locked to the case.
Although its £60
1.5x more power than the standard iPhone.
if you're talking about the reecharge battery, i have one on my genesis running from a hub dynamo. works a treat. plus the dynamo powers the lights too
Dahon (folding bike makers) did a superb on bike charging kit especially for iPhone, and a nice waterproof case too. I'm not entirely sure if the charging kit can be put on a road bike but it looked quite an elegant solution. If you want a really good waterproof iPhone 4 case, LifeCase do a really nice one.
If you don't move cities, then it's nice to explore
or buy a paper map.
I think digital maps are great too.
I've been ringing around importers and

I have an Edge 500 with hrm and cadence, brilliant device but doesn't have the maps.
Since I normally ride familiar roads, having maps on the device doesn't give me much...until, that is, I go on holiday and ride unfamiliar routes. So I've promised myself that I'm going to get an 800 just before summer hols next year.
In years gone by I have invested in MemoryMap maps and have lots of these on my Android. So I can access o/s and ign maps (and of course Google Maps etc.), just means I have to stop and pull my phone out of my pocket to do so.
The one I looked at on CRC was a micro usb battery clip.
Although reviews state it works, user reviews have found that the mounts are cheap and allow you to watch the iphone bounce down the road.
If Halfords had the Garmin 800 unit in stock I would buy it in a jiffy.

Was a good deal too but wanted the cadence sensor etc.
Thinking of buying an iphone mount that is waterproof and charges the phone too.
Garmin sell a cadence sensor and HRT monitor for your phone but then it leaves it a bit exposed to the elements.
What charges the phone, solar or pedal generated energy?

Completely forgot about phone+water formula = disaster!
I use the Edge 800 and it does all I need in terms of ride data and routing. I've never simply set an end point and asked it to get me there but I do plot courses in unfamiliar paces, upload them and then use the 800 to get around them. That's the main thing that set's it apart from other bike computers for me. I know that smartphones can be used for navigation but they are probably twice the size of the Edge even without a sturdy mount and take a lot of bar space but, more importantly for me, smartphones aren't designed to be even vaguely waterproof so if you get caught in a rainstorm and the phone gets wet you could end up with an expensive brick on your hands that probably wouldn't be covered by any sort of warranty. I'm sure there are waterproof smartphone holders out there but I still prefer the smaller, purpose made Garmin.

It did okay, to be fair. Bike hub app on smartphone is better and more configurable if that's what you want to do though.
There's plenty of ways of effectively waterproofing your phone. my main issue with smartphones is battery life. The 800 is good for about 12-15hrs, my phone struggles to 4-5...
Yes indeed, one I forgot and probably the most significant flaw in using a smartphone on longer rides.
