I-phone Apps

Howdy Dooody all, HNY and all that jazz..

Just wondering who use what I-Phone apps there to track their rides.

I've just been alerted to Strava (via Rapha) which looks ideal but its too new to run on my original I-Phone..

I'm on IOS 3.13 so can only use certain apps.

Anyone got any thoughts or recomendations?

Cheers

I doubt there's any argument that dedicated units aren't better, but if you have a piece of kit that will do the job nearly as well then why not use it? My phone is in my pocket anyway when I ride so it might as well record my ride. Re battery life, there are ways to ease that, reducing screen brightness being the big one as that is the biggest battery drainer, likewise if you know you're going to be using your phone GPS on a long ride charging it beforehand might be a good idea 39

They all drain your batteries. I hate them! I think you're better off with a dedicated GPS unit - loads of specialists around. The problem with phone apps for cycling is accuracy and battery. Dedicated units, so far, are better. Likely to change one day.

I generally use Runkeeper but have just started using Strava. Gutted, it actually proves how crap i am at climbing, descents and everything in between... 1

Though, I think that it makes you push yourself to better your times if you do the same routes that is.

Strava is unique (isn't it?)
It doesn't just log your journey, although it does that like endomondo and others, it automatically does KOM league tables comparing you with everyone else who's ridden the climbs or segments in your ride.

That's the selling point of Strava, seeing how you get on versus everyone else -the same motivation that video game high scores give you.

Cyclemeter works well for me - tip for extending battery life: turn off the wi-fi & 3G functions and my phone lasts for hours longer - they're not needed for sat nav type apps...

Good tip, because that's about the worst thing of using a smartphone for logging a ride, battery life that is. I'll try that next time.

I should have mentioned in my recommendation for cyclemeter that one of the things I like is that it doesn't require me to get involved with logging into a website. I can certainly see why folks get a kick out of recording and sharing their rides with others in their 'community'and Garmin's certainly seems to be successful in that respect but for now I'm quite happy with the facility that automatically emails the data in simple text to myself or whoever else asks for it at the end of a ride. It does include a .gpx file as well in case you need it for later.

I prefer Strava..

Becasue its orange, and not green (Endomondo) but I find the two quite similar in function..

So for me.. Its that simple xD

Like trikeman, I'm voting for cyclemeter which I've found very reliable.

I've tried Endomondo and Garmin fit. Prefer Endomondo at the moment, but satellite location seems to be a bit of a hit or miss affair on either app for me at least, be it Android or iphone.

Simple choice, best app out there is Endomondo, but as has been said, battery on phone's are no good for long rides

i'm using garmin fit this year too, on Android. battery life seems to be okay and garmin connect is about the best of the online portals. they're launching an API so you can get the info out as well, which is a big plus in my book.

also tried:

Endomondo: very good
Sports Tracker: good but i'm not a fan of the all-flash website and it tends to overestimate distance a bit. it does group your rides by comparing the routes you take which is very handy

The Garmin Fit app is good and relatively low battery usage. Useful in that your rides get uploaded to the garmin connect website so you don't lose them if you change or clear your phone, Worth it for £0.69, and battery life is okay on my iPhone 4S, although I believe it is now iOS 4 only.

I previously used Kinetic on my old iPhone 3G which was okay, although the battery consumption seemed a bit worse, and it could cause the phone to run a bit slowly (on my 3G anyway). Again, unfortunately it is iOS 4 only for the latest version I believe.

I think you'll struggle to get decent tracking performance from your iPhone without moving to at least an iPhone 3G, in which case I would try the Garmin app if I were you. Strava sounds good as you say, although I've no experience of it.

Just started using Strava (IOS 5) - haven't recorded a ride on it yet.

Used to use Endomondo, both on iPhone and Android but battery life atrocious, so bought a Garmin Edge500.

Hi Phax,
I use the cyclemeter app on my iphone and I find it great. I think it was 60 (ish) pence at the time, though I think it's gone up a little now. A cracking bit of kit really and just as good off road too.
Hope it helps.
Regards
