NHS supporter here! Dislocated collar bone and very pleased with the care - 2 ops and ongoing, decent physio.
Don't believe the private health hype.
Good news is that the bone wasn't actually broken, just CHIPPED, with bits floating all around my finger.
There is BARE internal bleeding, and a lot of soreness.
Turns out that it wasn't the bone sticking out of my finger, just some other finger stuff.
Going back to see Ricky*, my new favourite doctor on Saturday.
I've never been to a private hospital before, but I can see why you have to pay for it, it's soooo much better than NHS.
Never again though, it was 'fairly' expensive, rather have carbon bottle cages (about 6)...
*The first doctor to crack jokes, and then ring up to see how things are going later.
you can't ride far with a broken wrist, as i'm sure you found out and i know only too well. a pinky doesn't bear any load though and it's easy to isolate it my changing your hand position a bit. so make hay, i reckon.
This sort of thing is why paracetamol was invented. Chew 'em up and get in the saddle and rule 5 it.
Velominati Rule #5
Excellent point, Cooks.
If needs must, can always stick the offending digit out like some sort of posh tea drinking dude.
Anyway, back to the medical advice… 'can I ride with this injury?' Well, I'd advise against your dad taking you to the emergency hurty limbs dept on the family tandem.
Things start looking up after that though. According to Dr Google low magnitude vibration, possibly like the resonance from the road buzz might actually promote healing - it's done wonders for Chinese rats and rabbits apparently and is also being used experimentally to help promote faster healing in humans suffering from fractuures caused by osteoporosis – it might be uncomfortable though. The only thing I would worry about in the early stages of healing would be is the possible damage caused by any harsh jarring your hands might get from hitting a pothole or similar.
When you are at the hospital tomorrow I suggest you try to see a hurty finger specialist and ask him or her for a second opinion.
Right, where do I send my bill?
Yeah, but I'm an elitist so and so.
And my finger hurts.
Wellington hospital, St. Johns Wood is an international destination for people with hurty limbs and bodyparts, Ill have you know.
Hahah. You needed the internet to suggest that, with bone sticking out of your finger, it might be broken?
Although I'm more entertained by your approach to getting it fixed: you think you won't be waiting at a private hospital? Really? Still, a fool and his money ... Me, I'd prefer to be dealt with by someone who deals with such traumas on a daily basis, and has an entire hospital of staff and resources to call on if something goes awry.
