Fingers

Following Chuck's thought- and discussion-provoking threads over the last couple of days, I'd like to raise one of my own.

How many fingers do you have on each hand?

Or what about Franky Four Fingers. If we've all got 4 fingers on each hand, What's so weird about Franky?!

Why are they called fingers when I've never seen them fing?

All thumbs are fingers, but not all fingers are thumbs.

Well, on the one hand - five.
But on the other hand... four fingers and a thumb.

It's not about how many fingers - it's about whether it should be law or a personal choice.

Four fingers and a thumb on each. Thanks for asking.

When you slap hands with another person, do you call it a 'high four'?

Or do you call cut off gloves 'fingerless and thumbless gloves'?

When you were little and asked to 'use your fingers' to count, could you only get up to eight before you had to stop?

I'm a digitalist myself; I can go up to 20 on my distal appendages.

Speakers of Telefol use parts of their arm, their ears, eyes and nose and thus have a base-27 counting system - which no doubt seems perfectly natural to them.

We should accept the fact of evolution though - no-one's lobbying for them to be called "fin rays"*.

* Except the odd sarcastic Creationist maybe.

One of my kids asked me why there are 60 seconds in a minute and not 10 or 100. I showed her how to count to 60 using her hands. My wife was watching and I thought her head was going to explode.

I can see how that might be unsettling to see.
