Agreed. It ended up as two or three races in one - not sure how TdG ended up doing a mini team time trial with Sagan and Swift but it was very entertaining!

...and another great ride from Fabbro. He's been one of the best in the Giro so far.

Yes, he never has an easy day. Rides for Sagan in the lumpy stages & will switch to Maijka/Konrad duty in the mountains...

Is he a future GC rider?

Definitely has the right credentials - a real climbers build. Would need to show that he can perform over three weeks, but that is the stumbling block for so many (Alaphilippe, Mollema, Dan Martin and say it very quietly.......Fuglsang)

You can say it equally quietly about Almeida. New territory for him.

As a team Quick-Step don't normally prioritise GC but they do seem to have a decent team to support Almeida with Masnada still there as plan B & Knox riding well. I guess they will just ride the Almeida wave as long as they can - could suddenly end & he could still be in the jersey.... who knows? Deep down I don't think Almeida is a genuine GC rider but he should fill his boots while he can!

DQS were always going to be going GC at the Giro so they had a bit of a team set up to do so. It would have been for Evenepoel though.
I didn't see Almeida filling a leadership role though.

How quickly things change, I'd forgotten about Evenepoel! You are quite right though, it was meant to be his first Grand Tour test.

I just had a look at the points from stage 11. I think you might have Bilbao and Keldermann around the wrong way on GC. Bilbao is 3rd on GC yet got 9 points. I wonder if it has been this way since he dropped from second on stage 9 I think. I know it's not that big a deal, but over several stages could make all the difference to someone in the end.

Was the right way round for 9 and 10, just a random glitch in the matrix for stage 11.

Matthews tested again today and returned a negative result....pffft...My strategy in the purist game was to go with all of Sagan, Demare and Matthews. My four riders looking very thin now in the purist game.

On the plus side I suppose it takes some pressure of the race to abandon the whole thing.

Would not worry about that. Think four will be the norm, with all the big names that have DNS/DNF.

Just before the deadline I convinced myself it was worth a punt on Viviani.  The transfer might have been a waste anyway, but the moto can't have helped.

My other last minute decision in today's Classic was to dump Pedersen for Theuns (picked up that he might not sprint).  Maybe that will work out better with Mads abandoning.

If you think adding Viviani was an odd decision, I chose him INSTEAD of Gaviria! Was convinced that Gaviria was more seriously hurt in crash yesterday than his team were letting on & that Viviani was the answer. Moral of the tale is that, whatever the question, Viviani is never the answer!

I didn't even know Gaviria crashed yesterday. I absolutely would have picked Viviani instead of him if I'd known. I never pick a rider who crashed the day before if I know about it.

Same with me. It clearly wasn't a bad one, but I read that he had hurt his elbow. To be fair he didn't blame it for his performance today, just said he didn't have the legs. I wonder if his bout of Corona Virus in the spring has left him missing his top 10%...

This is on the UAE website - just to reassure myself that I wasn't imagining it!!!

"At the Giro d’Italia, Fernando Gaviria (still recovering after a severe bruise on his elbow due to a crash yesterday) crossed the finish line of the 11th stage, Porto Sant’Elpidio-Rimini, in 7th place in a sprint dominated by Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ)."

I didn't see the end of the race due to my second round trip of the day. I did see on OCS that Bilbao attacked....how close did he get?

He basically got up to front but Sagan attacked immediately leaving Bilbao second & Swift getting swept up by GC group. Bilbao got caught in last 2-3 Km's - shame as he ended up 10th & I needed the points!!

Shame I missed it. Bilbao trying to out sprint Sagan may not have quite turned out how Bilbao may have liked. Fair play to him for attacking though. There's something about Bilbao that I really like...ever the underdog that's just a whisker away from the rest.

Mitchelton Scott out of the Giro after 4 staff members tested positive. Kruijswijk is also out after a positive test.

Looks like it's Michael Matthews for Sunweb

What the very hell. Waited as long as I could this morning but had to go out. Did two transfers, Matthews back in was one of them....just did a panic transfer to take him back out and Vendrame in instead. What a waste.

I would have gone another way altogether and brought Ulissi in if I'd know.

The whole of Jumbo Visma is out now as well.

And same Winston, did the exact same thing.

Pressure on Sunweb now. They pulled Benoot from GW because he'd been in contact with someone who tested positive, but the whole team have been in contact with Matthews...

I did no transfers as it was just too uncertain this morning.  Thought it would be a breakaway stage and picking the riders for that would be difficult.  Through in a testing day and I just sat on my hands.

I do have Ulissi though, it was a punt for the breakaway Sunday and today.

The way it is going, saving transfers may not be that important! Unluckily for you, I have brought Vendrame back in as well, so that guarantees nul point!!

I was lucky - did my transfers last night and avoided Matthews - but it's really looking like the winner will be the last man standing when (and not if) the race gets stopped 2
