Maybe. It all seems quite half hearted from Matthews so far.
On paper Matthews is a better climber than Sagan so it would have made sense to push it just to test Sagan, but as you say, they seem to be backing Kelderman more. There are very few teams who seem able to control anything at present - probably only FdJ and then only if there is minimal climbing!
Guessing we all have yates and G. so what do we do now? does anyone think Nibali won't win this?
Maybe.
I once had a conversation with my brother who I play against....I said to him that really we should just pick Majka and Kruiswijk for 5th and 6th, or thereabouts, in every stage, They never win anything but never let us down....and they're at it again.
I went for Bilbao over Nibali because it made the funds easier for the sprinters if I kept Thomas and Yates. So much for that little plan.
My Purist team had G, Yates, and Vlasov
Nibali has to win it really. Although I'd love Kruijswijk to get it after the disappointment of 2016. Reckon he'll attack on the Agnello? Fuglsang - no support (and a possible asterisk), Kelderman probably not quite good enough. Majka - not the rider he was in 2014, but that might be a good thing?
Yates is still Schrodinger's GC rider though. 2'50 down on Nibali - but I wouldn't be surprised if holding that time gap would still put him on the podium. And he's potentially better in the TT than Nibali, Majka and most others, and probably better in a summit finish sprint, so might get at least a minute back... if this was one bad day and not him running out of form.
Both the twins have had bad days before and bounced back. He surely can't win it now but he should improve his place quite a lot.
Ten minutes into the Giro & two of my team have royally messed up! Can only get better from here surely........
Campanaerts and Dowsett?
Yep!
Dowsett didn't mess up, he had a puncture.
Look at Dennis though, he got a cruel bit of wind, couldn't even get on the skis because he was fighting to keep the bike straight.
I know, it was just a poor turn of phrase!
Suspect many have Dowsett and Campanaerts. I do too.
Shuffled between Dennis and Thomas a number of times. Got the wrong one.
I like the way Zabel did the KoM on a road bike and then changed, not concerned with getting the TT win. I wonder if others might get it a bash to get the jersey
It's a complete lottery - had Sagan in until last minute, swapped him for Kelderman, that's how random my thoughts have been! Mind you Sagan currently carrying 4 points in kom standings!
Crap, might have just lost my first rider from the purist team. Lopez getting caught out by the shit roads that the riders have been complaining about.
Somewhere in Wales I think Thomas spent the winter drawing a perfect grand tour for himself...and it came true.
His plan went into overdrive at Dauphiné - rode just badly enough to get shunted from Tour to Giro!
Not only does it suit him down to the ground but he's some how managed to ensure every rival that would have been equally happy with it aren't there.
