I really can't wait for this race to settle down a bit, it's a little unsatisfying at the moment because the narrative (klaxon!) is so unpredictable. Riders who should be performing aren't (looking at you, Pete S), we've got the time-trial and pursuit world champion in the mountains jersey, it's all very confusing.
Looking like they're gonna let the four man break go. Up to nearly 10 mins now.
And on a stage where the break gets a free pass, TdG isn't in it........he's still lurking in my team though! Will I ever learn?
Mine as well.
We need to think this through. Could it be that the peleton don't like him going because it means they have to work harder to bring him back...rather than being scared he wins?
After I posted about the four man break being almost 10 mins ahead Bora set about reeling them back in, and did it with ease...to the point of too easy so had to back off. If TDG is in there they have to work so much harder. No KOM tomorrow and echelons a distinct possibility...time for him to go.
I just want to state a big F U to Matthias Brandle. I removed him from my team, then he rolls in last after I talked to one of his team mates the other day and said, if you are in the groupetto, do me a favour and roll in very last to score me points. I don't know if he's spread that via the whole team...lol
His time is definitely up, but just to sow a seed in my head, he grabbed a couple of KOM points today. As you say, no climb tomorrow so, unless he comes dead last or Oldani wins the sprint, he goes! Fair play for picking Demare - on the sprint spectrum, I thought it would be more at the Ulissi end than the Hodeg end so picked accordingly. Shame as Demare is one of my favourite riders!
i kept him in the end. I saw the weather and didn't fancy the chances for a lot of sprinters so decided to use that transfer later on and gamble on the weather doing the rest today for a low scoring stage. In the end I don't think the wind really materialised for the second half of the race so it was a fairly normal run.
Best thing about this game is a transfer is never wasted...you just use it later instead.
A saved transfer is very satisfying! I got away with putting Viviani in instead of Gaviria to save a transfer and am currently smug.....until I make the wrong call tomorrow
never considered him. If I'd done the second transfer it would have been for Cimolai or Ballerini. Both second string today for their respective teams but top for tomorrow. Getting both of Gaviria and Sagan for me would have been one too many one day picks. Did I mention I pigging hate Gaviria. What the hell was he doing sitting up like that?
Gaviria, Viviani? almost seem the same. senior moment wasted transfer.
Very windy tomorrow and echelons on the cards....not sure Viviani and Gaviria will like that too much. Need to keep our eye on the weather to see just how windy. Viviani was dropped really easily on that climb today...he still has a finish but he's not looking very strong.
Didn't make any difference in the end, but I'm really not with this at the moment maybe saturated. Don't understand why I left Demare out and put Vivina in, it just doesn't make any sense, maybe my team has been hacked?
I think that may be the last time I pick TDG. He wanted the break but he's just the target to stop for all those with an eye on a stage win and others who fancy a pop at the KOM competitions. They just won't let him go now.
I used to have TdG alot a few years ago and made some good points off him, sadly, he only gets away now and again, rarely when there is something to race for, like today.
On another point. I think I should start publishing my purist list in advance, to show which riders to avoid, that's me down to 5 already..
Oof 3 down is rough. I'm only down Thomas thankfully, but I'm, sure there are a few others in your shoes.
Dunno, so far there are only 7 riders officially out of the race, including the 3 who already DNF today.
Thomas is ok, neither here nor there because everybody would have had him. I think a lot would have been caught out with the Astana boys though.
I rarely get him now. I thought, being as he has already gone out once in this Giro he might fancy it again...and he did...the problem is everybody else won't let him go.
I got a couple of online friends to have a go at purists with me in a little league. They've been equally unlucky so I doubt they'll play again...sadly.
The worst I've done is end up with just two riders in one of the purist races a couple of years ago. Shocking.
I thought he was going to help you out, but sadly it wasn't too be, thankfully I have Ganna in my purist squad, even if I keep losing other riders, haha
Lost Yates and Thomas from my purist, although I have Ganna.
I had Ganna last night, dropped him for today, in my standard.
I picked Dennnis over Thomas on Stage 1. Inexplicably convinced myself that Sagan wouldn't get up the short climb at the end of Stage 2. Dropped Visconti who I had for Stage 2 before Etna where he was second.
Every call I make now, seems a bad one.
Top 6 in the other race today. Most will have lots of those.
Yates? He's still in the race...
He is. Got myself mixed up. Maybe not in GC contention, but he is still in the race.
He may well end up with good pts if he goes for KOM by accident when trying to get back into the GC rather than GC alone. At the moment he's not looking too good for anything though. At some point he has to try a big play or two in the later stages.
I feel the same regarding bad calls currently. Brought in Caicedo rather than Vanhoucke yesterday when Vanhoucke was clearly the better longer term pick. Gambled on big break winning today so was at least one GC rider light but I guess we all have hard luck stories!! Flèche Brabançonne went well for just about everyone - only Wellens missed for me (& if I hadn't had him I would have had Trentin, who blanked as well, so I can't moan about that one!)
Haha just made my transfers for today then realised I'd missed the deadline. Classic.
I would have been caught out by the early deadline for both races today too, but was woken up by the cat at 4am and remembered to do them then
...not that I have anyone in the break, so it will probably have been a waste of effort anyway!
The more I look at this stage the less I like the sprinters. I think it would be quite easy to drop the lot of them if a team was minded to do so.
Yes, was surprised Sunweb didn't do more to try & dislodge Demare & Sagan. UAE might have been better abandoning Gaviria on the climb and pulling for Ulissi as he would be able to hold his own in a massively reduced sprint. It is all very easy being an armchair DS though!
Agreed. It was the reason I kept Ulissi. I didn't like the look of that climb at all for the sprinters...they were quite lucky that Bora didn't attack a km or so earlier than they did...and I include Demare in that.
Sunweb might have fancied their chsnces dispatching Demare, but not Sagan.
With Bling on the way out and pink so open, are they backing Kelderman more than Bora are backing Majka.
