Bristol designers aim to revolutionise women's cycling wear after winning Lycra design prize

Young British designers impress with sportswear collection - coming to a cycle path near you soon

It’s a regular concern of women cyclists - where to find stylish, flattering and high performance cycling wear?

A new source might just be on its way though, thanks to a new business set up by two Bristol women on the back of a first prize win in a sportswear fashion competition.

Lucy Gardner, 22 and Emily Buzzo, 22, are close to manufacturing their cycling garments under the brand name Fierlan, the Old English word for journey.

In October, Lucy won the Lycra Future Designers Award, fighting off tough competition from designers worldwide showcasing their cycling garments, swimwear and lingerie.

She won in part because of her designs to fit a variety of shapes and sizes, and her concern for etical fashion, with the desire for materials to be sourced from within Europe.

Lucy said at the time: “I am absolutely thrilled to win this prestigious prize.

“I can’t wait to see my designs come to life and to work in getting the collection in front of buyers, designers, stores and consumers. This is one of the most exciting things that has happened to me!”

In addition Lucy won a package of fabrics with Lycra content, to help with the development of a collection to help kick-start her career.

“Lucy’s designs were incredibly impressive, and the talent in the final four made it a tough decision,” says Denise Sakuma, of Invista, who manufacture Lycra.

“However all the judges were especially impressed with Lucy’s cycling designs and its functionality.”
