Video highlights: Lizzie Armitstead leads World Cup after winning Ronde van Drenthe

British national road champion Lizzie Armitstead yesterday won her first ever UCI Women World Cup race, the Boels Rental Ronde van Drenthe – and as the opening event of this season’s competition, she also gets the leader’s jersey.

Armitstead’s win came after she outsprinted Rabo Liv’s Anna van der Breggen, who had attacked from 40km out along with team mate Iris Slappendel.

The Dutch pair got an unexpected boost after the chasing group was briefly sent the wrong way, but once back on the correct route Armitstead’s Boels-Dolmans team mate Ellen van Dijk put in a huge effort to close the gap.

Armitstead attacked on the final climb, getting past Slappendel. She then caught van der Breggen with 10km remaining, the pair staying alone out in front all the way to the finish.

Slappendel finished in tenth place, but got on the podium to receive the sprints jersey – particularly noteworthy since her day job is as a graphic designer, and she won the UCI’s competition to design this year’s jerseys.

It was almost a double celebration for Yorkshire at the Dutch race yesterday – in the men’s event, NetApp-Endura’s Scott Thwaites just missed out on the win, finishing second to Lotto-Belisol’s Kenny Dehaes.
