Happy Hours for singer in pub cycle tour

Singer, Paul Heaton looking for traditional pub venues to play in

Former Beautiful South singer Paul Heaton is planning a cycle tour of England to promote cycling and traditional pubs - and he's looking for venues to play in.

The composer of ditties including Song For Whoever and Rotterdam will set off from the Rovers Return pub, on the Manchester-based set of Coronation Street, in May. In a Kraftwerk-style approach to touring, he'll do 720 miles by bike, reaching pub venues across the north and midlands in time for a pint and a few tunes.

Even better, the ex-Housemartins frontman will also encourage fans and locals to cycle to gigs – as part of the aim is to promote cycling as the greenest form of transport.

“I’m looking forward to pedalling around the country to promote cycling and the British pub,” said Heaton.

“Both are very close to my heart. I’ve been cycling all my life and the British pub has provided most of my favourite stop-off points.

“It saddens me to hear about so many British pubs closing on a weekly basis so I want to do all I can to get people back to their local.”

Real ale society CAMRA has welcomed the idea. Senior marketing manager Tony Jerome said: “This fun and unique way of supporting and promoting the traditional English village pub is just what the pub industry needs with more than 50 pubs closing every week.”

Heaton is looking for pubs in a 10-mile radius of: Rochdale, Congleton, Much Wenlock, Stratford Upon Avon, Thame, Tutts Clump, Godstone, St Neots, Wisbech, Skegness, Beverley, Otley, Burnley and Manchester.

Kev,
You really do come across as the most ridiculous idiot.
Reading some of your other posts all you seem to do is rubbish people and their efforts, making assumptions on their abilities.

Paul Heaton lives half a mile down the road from me. Not sure I've seen him cycling about, but then I'm never very good at spotting famous people.

I'm not sure why he needs to be descrbed as a "has been". I suspect the royalties he recives are enough to allow him to pursue these sort of activities and, if it means he rides to pubs and raises awareness of the loss of the local from British life, then fair enough.

Karbon Kev you have missed the point entirely. The Tour is to promote a fast disapearing part of British Culture namely the local pub and cycling which I assume you support as a reader of RoadCC or are you really Jeremy Clarkson? Does everyone who was once famous have to be described as a "has been"? This is quite derogatory. Excellent idea Paul I hope to cycle to a gig near me!

Well he is a has been and he's promoting cycling and drinking, not a good mix. And no, I'm not JC for gods sake, nor would I want to be. I'm more of a cyclist than you could ever hope to be billiobob.

My vet is in Tutts Clump, it is the most miniscual hamlet just off the road through a fairly small village. What a truly odd place to look to do a gig...

I especially like the fact that it's Tutt's Clump, then, oh. Manchester.

surely Manchester's not short of pubs? I lived there for a year and wasn't exactly scraping around for places to drink, as i recall...

I wonder how many pubs there are within ten miles of some of those places that can only be reached through a nasty climb? 19

Should we be promoting cycling and drinking just to rejuvinate a has been pop star's career? I don't think so.
