Right, we’ve waded through the 1220 comments you left about what you like most about autumn cycling which included having to read POEMS (note to self, never, ever, ever ask people to do that again) but the psychic trauma has been worth it. We have a winner… and because the standard of entries was so high a couple of bonus runners up too who will be getting some roadcc socks.
Our Vulpine Schwag Grab podium is filled by the speakers of two universal cycling truths and one rather personal truth.
Almost but not quite for robbiezhaorobbiezhao for masterful use of the sympathy card with “The cold rivals that of the heart of my wife” - until you realise that it’s not really that cold at this time of the year, even in East Anglia. (Maybe we should send her some socks too.)
Socks also for tells-it-like-it-is “I just love wearing tights” from wrevilo but somehow it lacks the poe… magic of our winner the tells it like it even more is:
“Shining torch through the fog/mist whilst making light saber noises. Obviously…” by Mattclimb
Yep, that's autumn!
Our winner and runners up have been informed - those who posted poems about nature’s paintbrush turning the trees the colours of their fave beige Vulpine shorts - your names are on a list. First offence, but don’t push it eh.
Thanks to Vulpine for a fab competition, thanks to all of you who entered, commiserations to the 1219 of you that didn’t win, but there WILL be another schwag grab along soon.
=====================================================================================
The whole caboodle is worth more than £500 (£502 to be precise) and includes Vulpine’s:
Original Rain Jacket
Cotton rain trousers
Long Sleeve Merino T-shirt/base layer
Padded Merino Boxer/Boyshorts
Storm Cap
Dogtooth Merino Silk Socks
We’ll pick the lucky winner next Monday, usual Schwag Grab rules apply.
You can find out more about Vulpine's autmn/winter range at www.vulpine.cc
Good luck!

The gasps and kudos you get from workmates when they see that you've cycled into work through cold wet dark winter mornings
Temperature inversions with low lying layers of mist, like this morning
Riding from my house to Richmond Park at 05.00 on a Friday morning. You can count the number of cars on one hand. Then entering the park with only a friend, who meets me weekly, to watch the deer roam as we ride quietly through the mist and enjoy a cold, damp sunrise with hardly a soul in sight.
Never knowing what kit to wear, and always ending up too hot or too cold.
William Blake:
“The spirits of the air live in the smells
Of fruit; and Joy, with pinions light, roves round
The gardens, or sits singing in the trees.”
Thus sang the jolly Autumn as he sat,
Then rose, girded himself, and o’er the bleak
Hills fled from our sight; but left his golden load.
putting on wet shoes from this mornings ride only to get soaked again on the way home. no wait.
I dream of commuting in kit that nice. Cheers guys.
What I love most about cycling in Autumn is seeing the changes in nature, especially seeing geese flying overhead - those guys are masters of drafting and if you watch them you'll see they all take their turn on the front.
I would have to say I enjoy Autumn because it is not winter. Have to be optimistic.
Being able to use my expensively assembled autumn gear (and an excuse to buy more!).
Autumn colours on the trees. Bright sunny rides (when it's not raining). Remembering that I actually don't mind riding in the rain.
misty mornings and early sun
I like the cool misty mornings and the long shadows in the evenings.
There's no better road surface for improving bike skills than slimy, rotting leaf mold. Can't wait.
Breathing in the crisp, clean air. Witnessing the beautiful colour changes; the mix of reds, yellows and greens then home for some pumpkin soup
What better way to improve my bike handling skills/confidence with greasy surfaces. There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad kit!
That moment the day really starts.
You, your bike, the rising sun, warm coffee lingers on the tongue.
It's time to wind the legs up to power through the chill air.
Crank up a beaming smile. It's autumn again. Bring it on.
After the heat of Summer, the crisp Autumn chill is a delight.
I alas cannot match the beauty of William Blake quotation but please I' d love the gear!
Best thing got to be not to know what lies underneath those leaves. A bit of spice to the usual boring tarmac.
The first rides in autumn kit - keeping warm against the new cold.
The crisp mornings, the cold breathe starts. Knowledge it's going to get warmer in the day from the and spectacular views of the countryside. How long can I pedal for?
Autumn is the first chance I get of a day off, to go out on the bike, since early Spring.
burning sensation in my legs at the end of the ride
Looks great! Just what I need.
Setting off in the dark lit up like Blackpool illuminations, seeing the sun rise on a misty morning and appreciating quality waterproof clothing!
Wrapping the good bike in cotton wool for another year.
The return of the geese - thousands flying overhead during an Autumn ride is good for the heart and soul!
Quieter roads on a dark Sunday morning!
I like the temperature, and the novelty of wearing autumn kit (which wears off after a while! The novelty, not the kit, that is!)
